Final Project – Cultural Diversity Developing an understanding about the diversity of the population in the United States of America is paramount when interacting with demographics different from my own. I fell that the information that I received about others during the Cultural Diversity course has assisted in understanding and relations between those I interact with on a daily basis. One of the subjects covered during the course that stands out in my mind is the discussion of stereotypes. The discussion of stereotypes has made me conscience of my own misunderstanding of other cultures. The Jewish community was one of my most misunderstood cultures. My main misunderstanding about the Jewish community was anchored in religion. Being of Christian faith the Jewish people were like villains. After reading and reviewing about Jewish people I have more understanding and realize that their beliefs are very similar to my own (except for the obvious difference). In addition to learning about other racial, ethnic, and cultural history groups I learned some new information about my own. I was not aware of the vast cultural influence African Americans have in the United States of America. Of course I am aware of African American influence in agriculture, literature, and music. What I was not aware of was African American contribution to the sciences. Some notable contribution to science came from Granville Woods who had a number of patents to improve electric railway systems, including the first system to allow moving trains to communicate ("Wikipedia", 2012). Frederick McKinley Jones contributed by inventing the movable refrigeration unit for food transport in trucks and trains ("Wikipedia", 2012). Lloyd Quarterman worked with several other black scientists on the creation of the atomic bomb (code named the Manhattan Project). In addition Mister Quarterman also

There was a great deal of new information about diversity available during this course. There was never had much of a chance to learn about other cultures considering the current environment. Growing up in Salt Lake City Utah, which is almost entirely Caucasian, particularly in the more wealthy areas, diversity in cultural and racial systems was almost non-existent. The area is also not very mixed religiously, being almost entirely dominated by the Mormon Church. People of the catholic faith are in the minority in the area. This can give a point of view on discrimination that is not as common among Caucasian males as it is among females and people of other races in the United States. The interest in history meant that there was a great deal of familiarity with the history of discrimination, but the realization that many of those struggles still persist today was never appreciated. Learning more about the current conditions of the various races, particularly the difference in salary has helped foster the understanding that discrimination is still very present in today’s society.…

According to the Roman Catholic Faith Jesus Christ himself created the Catholic Church in 33A.D. The Prejudice against Christ and his followers started during his life from many of his miracles, teachings about his father “God” and the testament on how we as Christians should live our lives. The Prejudices stemmed from not only the Jewish faith and non-believers but from rules who feared that Jesus was a King above all kings and they would lose their empires. Christians would avoid discrimination by practicing in secret and coming up with a symbol to represent them self. The ½ fish. When 2 Christians would meet each would draw a half fish and together it would complete the symbol. An example of ultimate prejudice and discrimination is when Jesus was taken before ponchos pilot and the crowds choose Barabbas a thief and murder over Jesus. Ultimately Jesus was sentenced to crucifixion which nailed the end of Christ but the beginning of the catholic Faith forever. Between 33A.D and 1520A.D there were 13 Christian- religions that came about. One of them was the Roman Catholic Church. In 1545A.D The Roman Catholic Church Re- Evaluated some practices and beliefs because of several upsets in the church, wars, and Racial shifts due to global colonization of The Americas in 1492. This was called the Council of Trent. This movement would lead to thousands of new Christina religions, including fraction Catholic groups as well. These religions lay subservient if you will to the Alpha Roman Catholic church. An English Historian once acknowledged that “If any other human institution had known such great inner corruption or outer hostility, it would long ago have perished.” (Champlin, 1999). Thus is noted as an example that Divine intervention has withheld the Human elements we taint religion with. An example of this is in the early 1500s Jesuit Monks, and Catholic Bishops came to North and South…

My own racial, ethnic, or cultural history is a great big mess of origins, religions, and culture but this class made me realize that one I am not alone in time case and that I too as a person have boundaries that hold me back. For instance there is a glass ceiling which is “the barrier that blocks the promotion of a qualified worker because of gender or minority membership” (ch.3, pg. 78) this is not a barrier of race or religion or culture its based on gender and I being a women hinders my ability to progress in some areas of the working world. This is some thin that women from not just the United States have been fighting for but the United States I see ha made great strides to make things more equal and fair.…

African American’s faced some of the worst and cruel punishments in United States history. When one thinks of African Americans they think of slavery, however there were several other elements to the demise of African American men and women. Moreover, African American’s were mistreated in almost every way possible. However, through sacrifice, willpower and determination, African American’s managed to accomplish many milestones throughout the 20th and 21’st centuries, leading to much of the success that we see today. There were several African American activists who put their lives in harm’s way on a daily basis in order to achieve equality throughout the nation. From major sporting accomplishments (Jesse Owens) to the election of the first African American president (Barrack Obama), blacks have accomplished much success in their mission to gain respect and equality. Although early in the 1900’s many of the accomplishments would be considered minimal to folks outside of the African American race, to the African American’s the accomplishments were considered major milestones. In the paragraphs to come I will examine key milestones that African American’s achieved, analyzing the importance of each and explain how such events may have contributed to developments in the later decades. Specifically, I will explore events including: The Niagara Movement, The Harlem Renaissance, Jesse Owens wining four gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Berlin (1936), Brown vs. Board of Education (1954), many of the core accomplishments during the Civil Rights Movement, and the United States election of 2008.…

When it comes to the topic of diversity and what is has taught me I really think of a few things. Diversity has really taught me a lot about myself as well as tolerance to others around me. Really there is nowhere in the world today that diversity is not present or has not had some sort of effect on our society as a whole. All in all I think that diversity really just means being different than others in various ways. I think if the United States never had any instances of diversity we would be a pretty boring and simple society. Many of our great minds of today as well as the past where very unique and diverse individuals. Without any type of diversity we would be exactly alike there would be nothing different about each other. The world would be plain and boring as well. I like to think that without any type of diversity the world would be without any type of color or texture as if we were in a 50’s TV show.…

History has never been one of my favorite subjects; however this class has sparked a new interest in me in regards to my culture and how that culture came to be. This Cultural Diversity course has made me pay more attention to the people around me. I think this awareness has helped me relate to and also understand people in a way that I never have before. The one thing that totally surprised me was finding out that white privilege was something real. I thought that this was an ill feeling and belief that mostly Black people had in regards to the White race. White people, in my mind, had it all; they had certain advantages simply because they were White. The White Privilege section in Chapter 13 of Racial Ethnic Groups states a few of those advantages. I knew that being considered financially reliable, having the ability of articulation, and seeing people of the same race being represented in popular media were common advantages of the White race. Consequently, I thought they saw themselves as privileged and were proud about it. The information from this course that will be the most memorable is that, in general, the people from the White race do not see themselves as have any ethnicity. They feel as though they have been separated from their European roots; they are simply Caucasian. They are also victims of reverse discrimination; I almost laughed the first time I read this in the text. Now, I know that this is a laughing matter. I have seen evidence of this in my life. I asked 50 of my neighbors a yes or no question. This question was: “Do you believe that most Black people would label a random White person they see on the street as a racist?” Out of the 50 people, of evenly varied ethnicities, 41 of them replied with a yes. These results are a relevant example of how much diversity affects the person, currently and throughout history.…

What has helped me better understand or relate to others in ways that I may have not in the past was probably during a crucial time in America, and that was 9/11. Many people had a hard time liking Muslims and I didn’t quite understand. I gradually figured out that because some Muslims are bad doesn’t mean that all Muslims are bad. I have grown a respect for Muslims and for other races. As an African American, I have not learned anything new about my family or our culture. What I have realized is that I hear about African American leaders, and people who have stood up for their race. I feel honored at times to be who I am, I don’t neglect my race at all, and I embrace it.…

Diversity can be such an interesting topic. When one mentions diversity several things come to mind and most often the first thing that comes to mind is the cultural diversity of The United States. To gain a better understanding of different cultures around the World, a person could spend their life traveling the globe or even better yet they could sit back and take in the daily occurrences around them. It is hard to find a country more culturally diverse than our own and yet we fail to see it. There are several reasons that we fail to see this diversity, whether it be a lack of understanding or just a lack of willingness to understand. For a country that is called “the melting pot of the world”, we certainly still have a prevalent degree of prejudice and discrimination. Some would call it a lack of insight and willingness to grow; I prefer to call it ignorance and fear, fear of differences and change.…

Ever since the Europeans forcefully brought Africans west, black people have struggled with a loss of their true culture and identity. The vulnerability of a displaced and victimized race subjected them to view conformity and assimilation as a panacea for racism, discrimination, and oppression. It wasn't until the 1960s that students began to realize and protest the traditional methods of higher learning where the curriculum was taught through the White perspective without the acknowledgment of contributions black people have made to society. Through rallies and organizations, it was made clear that something had to be done about the stolen ideologies of African Americans being replaced with an outlook from the European perspective. African American Studies is a change agent for the ideology of Black Americans. Black studies as an academic discipline serves to reorient the perspective of African Americans in an effort to regain a sense of pride and cultural identity stolen by white society.…

In the documentary “I am not Your Negro” directed by Raoul Peck, the most memorable moment for me is the section focuses on integration at American public school. It is difficult for me to believe that many people march on the street only because an African American girl is going to school with the white kids, and I feel really angry and shocked when people are saying things like “when a negro child walk into the school, all decent parents should take their white children out of the broken school”, or “God can forgive adultery, but he is angry about integration ”. Even though those comments and events can have a huge impact on social discrimination and hurt to African American, they are real things that happened in the American history, and…
