Can I Do This Alone?

By: Lynette Smith

When I think back into a time in my life when I felt like an outsider not many events come to mind. One in particular does rein clearer than the others though. That would be when I arrived at my first duty station while on active duty in the United States Navy. The thought of leaving home for the first time was completely nerve racking. I had no idea what to even expect. I felt for the first time in my life I had to do something alone. Fresh out of boot camp as a Culinary Specialist I was attached to the USS Enterprise CVN 65 homeport Norfolk, Virginia. Of course I am expecting I would report to the ship as well as to Norfolk, Virginia. Instead I reported to a barracks in Portsmouth, Virginia. The ship was currently being repaired in a shipyard located in Newport News, Virginia . I arrived very nervous and feeling a bit like a lost puppy. I was shown to my room which was similar to a hotel room which contained two twin beds and a full bathroom. As the days passed I met a young man named Williams we hit it off very well as friends. We began to talk and found our common interests. We pretty much became drinking buddies. Even though I had found a friend to temper the sting of loneliness I still felt out of place. I felt very much like an outsider. Being a brand new sailor and knowing minimal things about pretty much everything definitely did not help. Being the new person leaves you feeling pretty vulnerable. Once I arrived in the working environment I felt even more like an outsider. There were all these cliques of people laughing and having fun. I only knew Williams and he worked in completely different place. Then to top it all off I was completely overwhelmed with learning how to cook in such large quantities. Making food for 300 people that is just ludacris. The first item I ever cooked was chicken breasts. I was so nervous I could not even think straight enough to remember to

I am lucky enough to say that most of the time, I don’t really feel like an outsider. Usually, I can quickly adapt to new situations and easily relate to people. The one time that stands out in my mind of when I did feel like an outsider, is when I started high school. Like many others, the first day of high school was very nerve-wracking to me. I went to Castro Valley High School, which is a fairly large, public high school. The student body there numbers over three thousand.…

The voyages of discovery and of the new world were promoted by many factors economically, technologically, politically, and religiously. In the years from about 1450 to 1525 there were many reasons as to why explorations were aided by the main four factors that were previously stated. Advancements in astronomy and navigation were big technological factors. Countries were gaining little income, causing them to go and search for ways to become prosperous was an economic factor. The marriage of Ferdinand and Isabella that unified Castile and Aragon was a major political factor. The desire for Christianizing people of the new world was a huge religious factor. All of these factors were a cause of, and motivated, European exploration.…

The article “Red Flags Before Santa Monica Shooting, But Pointing Fingers is Hard”, by Gloria Goodale states the need to raise awareness in schools, workplaces, and families and teach people to identify red-flag behaviors. Such signs can include a change in behavior, an interest in violent weapons, strange writing, feeling hopeless and the desire to hurt someone. People can be trained recognized behavior before incidents happen, but there are challenges, because it could discriminate against people with mental health problems. The article “Colleges Are Watching Troubled Students”, by Jeffrey McMurray, mentions how many colleges and universities began monitoring and sharing information about troubled students after the Virginia Tech shootings, to prevent crime and violence on school campuses. School officials created a “watch list” of troubled students and decided whether they needed professional help or if they should just kick them out of school. Both articles are similar because if “red flag” behaviors were spotted early on it could prevent those students from harming themselves and others.…

It was in the muggy day in the middle of July and I was stuck outside watching a bunch of bratty kids run around in the woods playing tag and hide and seek. A few months earlier, I was applying for the Camp Counselor job at the M.E Lyons YMCA, which would be my first job. In the beginning of the summer, I had no idea that being a counselor would be extremely challenging, but very rewarding in the end.…

I never thought that it was all going to happen so fast. All of those after school practices took an eternity, but all it seemed like it ended in a split second. I couldn’t believe it. It felt like I was there physically, but mentally I was in another place. Almost as if I was in another dimension. It was all just really overwhelming, as I thought about our JROTC competing against all of those different branches of the military. It was just way too much to even…

I am shocked and appalled at your defective candy product, Exploderz. I regret to inform you that this product is grossly deficient. After ingesting just one serving, Exploderz kept my three children and husband up sick for an entire night. They leave a terrible aftertaste and, on top of that, cause internal damage to one’s body. I recommend a quick removal from the market in order to prevent anyone else from experiencing this type of sickness and pain.…

While I thought the feeling were just temporary, due to the unfamiliar surroundings, the feeling lasted a whole lot longer than I imagined. The essay “The Enduring Appeal of Agatha Christie” creates a strong case that Agatha Christie is one of the greatest authors of the mystery genre. The introduction paragraph does an excellent job on informing the reader of her argument, by indirectly stating that Agatha Christie is the “Queen of Crime Fiction”. The paragraph also goes on to include aspects of Agatha Christies writing (Strong characters, setting, and morality) that define her writing style. The first body paragraph is extremely effective for the main reason that in compares Agatha Christies characters with the famous Sherlock Holmes. This is effective because despite the fact that you may not know who Hercule Poirot and Miss Jane Marple are you can inference that they are detectives, similar to Sherlock Holmes. Also by comparing Christie’s characters with Sherlock Holmes it shows the reader that her writings are able to compete with well-known writings, like those of Arthur Conan Doyle. The second body paragraph is directed toward the plots that Agatha created in her novels. This paragraph effectively displays that Agatha was able to create settings of existing and non-existent places. One way she did this was to describe the setting in such detail that the reader would be able to interpret what time period It was without her stating a date. This clearly shows that Agatha Christie had a gift for writing literature. The third and final body paragraph is effective in showing the morality of Agatha Christie. It effectively does this by clearly stating that she was a supporter of the death penalty, by making the characters she writes about agree with it(Even the admirably friendly characters). This paragraph also goes on to show that she would write about her life events in her novels as well. It is effective in proving this point by stating that she wrote about RAF officers in a villainess way after her husband (Which was a RAF officer) divorced her. The concluding…
