Personal Narrative: Drilling
Have you ever had a sick feeling in your stomach? Ever been so nervous that you almost want to throw up? Soon, the drill team was headed to Florida for Drill Nationals. We were all terrified of the fact we had finally reached to this point of such a big and meaningful competition. I never thought that it was all going to happen so fast. All of those after school practices took an eternity, but all it seemed like it ended in a split second. I couldn’t believe it. It felt like I was there physically, but mentally I was in another place. Almost as if I was in another dimension. It was all just really overwhelming, as I thought about our JROTC competing against all of those different branches of the military. It was just way too much to even …show more content…
The best part of the day had arrived, dinner. We had a reservation at the pier in which we were going to eat dinner. We looked like a whole bunch of bees ready to attack. The food was there. Right in front of our noses. We could feel the presence of the warmth coming from the food. The smell was just making our mouths water and our tummies rumble. We looked at each other with such eagerness to have some of those explicit desserts in our mouths. There we were, with our food served and ready to attack. I knew that when I was done with this food there was no longer going to be any space for the dessert. Overall the food was amazing and the experience as well.
By now it was the third day at our trip to Drill Nationals in Florida. We were on a roll. We were hitting the practices with more intensity than ever before. We were all collaborating with each other and helping with whatever it was that we could help with. We spent that whole day practicing our routine over and over again. By the end of the day we were really exhausted and ready to head down to our hotel rooms to take a nice cool shower and just relax. As soon as we got there that was exactly what we did. By the time I noticed, I was already knocked

I was actually excited that the following day was going to be competition day. We practically spent all day swimming and just having a wonderful time down at the ocean. We all knew that we had to get the best out of this day because there was not going to be another day like this to enjoy. There we were around eight at night at a bonfire next to the ocean. Later we found ourselves in bed ready to get some good sleep for the upcoming day which was competition day.
There it was, competition day. We are downstairs in the lobby area eating some cereal and some waffles with some warm coffee to brighten and wake up our sleepy selves. All we needed was our pep talk and we sure got it. There were our instructors giving us motivation

It was going to be a short ride only about 4 hours altogether through the South Dakota mountains. About an hour into our ride, we reached the mountains and as soon as we did Brody, Eli, Maddy, and I rode our horses to the top of the mountains. When we reached the top of the mountains we got off our horses and looked out over the South Dakota scenery, it was a beautiful view. I have never seen a better view in my life. You could see so far since we were up so high in the air and when we looked down at Tommy and Cassie they looked like ants. After we took a few pictures we headed back down to Tommy and Cassie. We went a little further after we got down from the mountain and then we turned back and headed towards camp. We arrived back at camp we washed, fed, and watered the horses. When we were done with that stuff we made a fire and started carving on sticks for a competition we were having and then at about 11 we went to…

For a few summers after my daddy went to heaven, I found myself taking long walks into the woods, a far piece behind the back of my house. When I was young I’d play there every day and over time the trails grew wide. I knew those chaotic mazes as well as my own reflection in the Miner’s River. Sometimes I’d count the steps it took to reach a fork on a specific trail, having already decided which trail to take till I arrived.…

The team and I approached the starting line but as we approached it I remembered what the team told me once. “Competition gets harder the further the team goes” they once said which made me realize we had made it so far in the competition. It was now league finals, the hardest meet a cross country team can run. I was suddenly in my ready position at the starting line. Then, the gun went off.…

The next thing I know is that the train starts moving. It moves for three more days and I am crammed in one car with twenty other people who were enlisted. Finally, we arrive at Fort Stewart. I immediately get off the train and walk off to the barrack arrangements. After that, I walk to my barracks and find a bed that will be mine. I unload my stuff and change into a tee-shirt with some baggy green jeans with tears on the knees. At that moment everybody else came in, found their beds, and changed. Then a grumpy drill sergeant came in and screamed at us like the way mom would scream at me after I threw up on the table after our once a week veggie dinner. First, we start off with doing an obstacle course. Running and running I come up to a wall with ropes dangling from the top. I rapidly climb half way and see the guy next to me fall and break his arm. Finally, I get to the top and make my way down. After that, I am at the point where I can jump. The next thing is army crawling through mud with barbed wire above our head. It might seem nasty at first but it is very refreshing from how tired we are. When I came out I saw another guy that had his entire arm cut up from the wire. The last course was swimming across the lake while officers shoot blanks at us to make us experience the sound of war and in the most dangerous situation. By the time that is done, it is time to go to sleep. In the morning an officer plays the…

I knew it was going to be the longest nine weeks of my entire life. The first three days were pretty excruciating, no sleep, and no food. We were basically being prepared and tested for the hail storm up a head. Our drill sergeants were pretty much crazy, drill sergeant Calarco, 5’10 half Italian half something else, he had broad shoulders, abs of steel and did over 100 pushups in two minutes. Then there was the meanest, sickest person I had ever met, drill sergeant Coolidge. Probably around six feet tall freakishly skinny, freakishly strong and always gave you the crazies stare downs that made you look away immediately. I thought I knew what pain felt like, but after a session with Coolidge, the word pain took a very different meaning. Each exercise he made us do was meant to inflict pain and pain only. Towards the end of our training Coolidge told us that 90 percent of us were going to be deployed within a six month or a year period and man he was right. Six months later I had orders in hand saying Spc Garcia, you’re going to the sandbox.…

“Katelyn you're up!” I heard my lanky redheaded coach Kevin screech. I slid on my batting gloves that were caked in dirt, and tightened my helmet that was meant for a 8 year old. I felt a tingling sensation rush through my body, I knew that I was going to do something great. It was the top of the 4th and we were down by two, already down a player so our outfield had to work vigorously to make sure not even a sickly hit could get past them. I could see Kenzie, a short stocky girl, with a bright pink helmet get ready to sprint to 2nd. As I got up to bat I felt the tingling sensation continue to grow, scared out of my mind that I would strike out and end the inning, I stepped up to bat.…

    Narrative About Softball

It's the bottom of the seventh of the state championship game. As my metal cleats dig into the undragged dirt I realize this is it. This is the moment I have been dreaming of. As I'm walking to second base I start to reflect on what softball has given me. I have the greatest teammates in the world. Tahoma softball has a bond that is the true definition of teammates. Softball has given me so many great opportunities and I will never be able to thank it. It was given me motivation, strength, sisters and learning experiences I would have never experienced if it wasn't for softball. As I start thinking about that, I notice I have a little smirk on my face. I shake that grin off my face so that I can focus on what I need to do. Between innings,…

I got to my team's field and saw the perfectly chalked batter's box and baselines. I went into to the dugout and saw the lineup and I was batting first! I had the same excitement in this moment as I do every time I get a king size crunch bar on Halloween. I started to warm up and I felt good. Game Time was coming up but it felt like forever. I was getting the feeling that you get when you put a hot pocket in the microwave and your are waiting for that very very long minute. The ump told us to go to the dugouts and we knew it was game time. I got my helmet and batting gloves on and grabbed my bat. I took a couple swings in the on deck circle then I stepped into the batter's box. I swung at the first pitch and heard a sweet pop off my bat and watched my line drive hit land in front of the centerfield man and I was on first base with a leadoff single. All the nervous energy I had was…

“I made it, in three events,’’ a thought in my head. I wasn’t alone though, it wa my team including the girls, head coach Mr. Jefferies, and boys coach Mr. Heinrich. We had a 4 by 100 team including Mia Voss, Calyn Garza, Dana Clarke, and Brittany McClain, there was an alternate named Jalyn Haynes but also an 8th grader named Tayler Main qualified in a 200 meter dash. There were a lot of kids there that day, an average of about 900 kids or more.…

Graduating basic training and becoming a United States Army soldier is one of the greatest feelings in the world. Less than one percent of the population of the United States understands and knows exactly how it feels to reach this milestone in life. When I reached this point of my life I was full of a sense pride, relief, and accomplishment. I knew that I had just officially joined something much bigger than myself. The memory of my basic training graduation ceremony will forever be burned into my memory. The date was December 7th, 2012. This day was one of the toughest I had to endure.…

    Drum Corps Narrative

We set drill for the show and perfected the drill. We perfected the music to the show and added in visuals to give us more flair on the field. We were just counting down days until our tour started. Half way through spring training we got fitted for uniforms and shakos, which are helmets the corps wears. The last day of spring training we had everything packed up and ready to embark on tour. Tour was a two and a half month long joyride of living on buses and gym floors, stopping at Wal-Mart at three A.M and buying load of junk food and socks, and most importantly competing in competitions with other corps. The corps first performance was on that could be left out. Multiple problems with collisions and spacing between people riddled the show. The worst part of the performance was the field. The field was wet and muddy due to the thunderstorms that rolled through earlier which meant that the entire corps was sliding across the field the whole time. We kept getting better and better and added more interesting visuals to the show. In the end we made it to finals in Indianapolis where we first started. It was odd coming back to Indianapolis with the intent to place high in the leader boards. We felt the crowd cheering us on, the families yelling out names and infamous sayings. “Make us throw babies! Dylan we love you! I want you to make us cry!” I closed my eyes and soaked it all in.…
