Although Simon and Marji had different views about freedom, they all agree that freedom is very important for people to have in their life. First of all, Simon thought freedom meant not being captive, and people can do whatever they want instead of being told to do so. Additionally, he asserted that freedom is very important for people and he indicates that a lack of freedom will make people not be able to do what they want to do. Lastly, Simon told me he had seen numerous examples of freedom in his life. On one hand, he shared with me the freedom he saw in life. For instance, he freedom allows people to leave their houses when they want to instead of stay inside the house all the time. Furthermore, he said that freedom also exists when he can play all over the house without needing to ask for permission. On one hand, from Marji’s point of view, the veil symbolized the confinement for women. The veil lowered the social status of the Iranian women and made them obedient to the society. Connected to Simon’s point, the Iranian women could not do what they want to do, such as not wearing the veil because they were confined by the government. On the other hand, rebellion from Marji’s family and herself reveals how limited their freedom is. In the story, Marji and her family rebelled against the government in various ways. For instance, they held a secret alcohol party which is prohibited by the government. Furthermore, Marji bought Michael Jackson’s accessories and the fact that Dad smuggled posters under his coat also demonstrates rebellion against the government.
