Essay On Hugo Cabret
The novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret by Brian Selznick, Hugo discovers piece by piece the story of Georges Méliès’ life. This novel takes place in Paris of the 1930’s. Hugo’s father worked in a local clock shop and at a museum in Paris. When I the museum he finds a broken automaton, an automaton is an example of artificial life, in the attic. One night the guard forgot that Hugo’s Father was in the attic and locked him inside. Later that night the museum burred down and Hugo went with his uncle, who was the timekeeper at the Montparnasse Station in Paris. Hugo became his uncle apprentice and lived in his decrepit apartment inside the walls of the station. The rickety bed that Hugo slept on in the timekeepers apartment was frayed and not used for a long time.

Hugo told Isabelle that her godfather had taken Hugo’s notebook and Isabelle agreed to help Hugo get it back. When Hugo had gotten his notebook back from Isabelle he saw a key around Isabelle neck that he thought might fit into the back of his automaton so he stole. Isabelle and Hugo sat in the timekeepers apartment as they watch the automaton windup and spring into action. The automaton drew a picture of the rocket in the eye of the man in the moon from George Méliès film “A Trip To The Moon.” When the automaton signed Isabelle godfather’s name the two of them wanted to ask Isabelle’s godparents. They arranged for a friend of Isabelle and his teacher at the French Film Academy to come to Isabelle’s apartment so they could prove that George Mèliés had not died. Isabelle’s friend, Etienne, and his teacher, Rene Tabard, brought a movie projector and, “A Trip To The Moon” with him the the Méliès’ house. When the kids were watching the movie, George burst into the room and asked for the camera. He then locked himself in his bedroom where he spread out all of his drawing, pushed the bed to one side and began to watch his
