Research Paper On Jacques Cartier
Jacques Cartier was born on December 31, 1491 in St. Malo. St. Malo is an island seaport on the coast of Brittany. He grew up around the water, and was most likely fishing. Jacques spent very little time at home, as he was often sailing. In 1520, Cartier married Catherine Des Granches. They did not have any kids though. Cartier spoke Portuguese which leads us to think that he may have been on a portuguese ship that explored the coast of South America. Some claim that in 1532, Cartier was a master pilot who made trips to Brazil and Newfoundland. Jacques Cartier was a French explorer who had three major voyages. On October 31, 1533, Cartier was commissioned by King Francis to explore the Newfoundland, search for a northern passage to asia, and collect gold and spices. He set off from France with two ships and sixty one men. When he arrived, he explored the west coast of the Newfoundland and then discovered Prince Edward Island. He then went on to explore the Gulf of Saint Lawrence as far as Anticosti Island. He then captured two native americans from Gaspe Peninsula that would help him on his next voyage. Although majority of Cartier’s missions were successful, he did come across some problems. In his third voyage, he decided not to wait for the colonist to arrive. He sailed back to France with what he thought was diamonds. Before he arrived in France, he stopped in the Newfoundland. He encountered Roberval there. Roberval ordered Cartier to return with him to Quebec, but instead Cartier snuck back to France at night. Cartier returned to France with what he thought was diamonds, but they were really just valueless minerals. After this unsuccessful voyage, Cartier did not receive any more commissions.
