Essay On Free Community College
Is free community college the way of the future?

Right now in the U.S. College is basically a necessity to getting a good career later in life, but sadly, as it stands now, most U.S. citizens just cannot afford to go to college and further their education. This is a really sad fact in the U.S. right now and its due mostly to the fact of colleges, instead of competing with other schools in prices and tuition rates, compete in having the nicest looking campus and the most amount of student services. Doing this is actually driving the rates of most colleges up and without reform, many citizens in the U.S. won’t even have higher education as an option to them.

Right now, free community college is probably the most talked about option right now,

The only way that making community college free for students is to drastically increase taxes in the U.S.. This can really be hard to swallow for families who are currently near or below the poverty line who already struggle with the current rates as they are. Making community college free could potentially ruin the lives of the people it is most directed towards helping.

Another big point that Democrats are currently pushing for is putting more government control on colleges themselves. This would help prevent the wasteful nature that colleges currently have adopted and try to mold it into a more solely educational purpose. This would supposedly guarantee a good educational college process for all that choose to attend and increased graduation rates.

On the contrary though, more and more students who are mentally capable of taking on more challenging colleges then the community colleges in question will start to attend community college purely because of the cost, because it’s hard to turn away from free and attend an higher level institution. In turn there have been multiple studies showing that students who attend lower educational classes than they should be actually have a lower completion and graduation

Obama has proposed the idea of having community college be free in order to increase the number of people to own a degree. Joanne Jacobs writes in her article about free community college that “The White House estimates that this would cost $60 billion for over 10 years” to execute. With our economy in shambles at the moment, this can worsen the economic status of the country, adding to the drastic debt that continuously rises on a daily basis. If Obama creates some sort of promise about tuition being free, then another issue could arise, which is having schools become more crowded than what they already are. States need to spend more money in order to increase the…

Most college students who attend community college as a stepping stone towards achieving a bachelor’s degree at a university commonly fall short of this intention. Only 11.6% out of 81.4% of these community college students accomplish a bachelor’s degree at a university. Discovering this compelling fact was discouraging as a community college student desiring to pursue a biochemistry degree at a four-year institution. Financially, college students are saving more money in attending a community college their first few years in place of a university. President Obama proposed the idea of ‘free community college’ to improve the wages and living standards of the middle class. As a community college student, I wonder if this proposal would improve this startling statistic and aid the student’s desire to pursue their educational goals. In Robert Farrington’s article “Community College Is Not…

The National Student Clearinghouse reports that, “Just under 40 percent of community college students earn a degree within six years, compared with almost 74 at private nonprofit schools and about 63 percent at public universities. So if these low income students are already at odds then how will the fact that community college is free help. I have seen multiple of my family members attend community college and then stop going about after a year or so, where as I watched my sister graduate from a four year university. If community college is free we might see more kids attend them instead of four year universities simply because it will save them money. Like Matthew Chingos, research director at the Brown Center on Education Policy states we, “can nudge students to attend lower quality institution.” The hope of seeing more students get their degree as president Obama hopes may not be happen by making community college…

Many are against the idea of not charging for community college because they believe that not charging for community college will bring more debt to America. Andre Kelly, the director of the Center on Higher Education Reform at the American Enterprise Institute, describes why he believes that having free community college tuition is not the way to go. He states that community college is already practically free and that’s there’s no need to have this type of promise. That its incredibly naive for anyone to think that college graduate percentage would increase just because community college now has the label as…

College education being free, has been a topic that many debates, or come across often. Several countries do provide free college education, but this system won’t work in the United States especially in the highly populated regions. Therefore, making Community Colleges free, our taxes will rise, we will have overcrowded classrooms, and underpaid professors, all leading to poor quality of education. As stated by Mary Clare Amselem in her article ‘Free Community College is a bad deal for taxpayers and students’ , community colleges generally have a poor academic rate. Consequently, the education level for job employment will also increase.…

If one looks at the data, the bigger problem is that many students don’t finish college. “Only about 55 percent of students graduate six years after starting,” Bob Luebke (a writer for the Civitas Institute.) The problem is not access but completion. So why do people drop out of college? For the most part, money is not the biggest problem; it’s usually factors like family issues, or transportation. Providing free tuition to institutions that graduate only a small amount over 50 percent of their students does not make economic sense. Also, if college tuition does become free for students, colleges will attract more young people who are not suited for college and will most likely drop out as well as more students that will major in fields with little or no market…

There are more expenses than people realize to keep a facility like a community college up and running. Aside from the administration and instructional staff, community colleges need support staff to keep up with things like record keeping, filling, enrollment, etc. Where will the money come from to pay for expenses like building maintenance, grounds maintenance, etc.? Do you think the facility magically cleans itself, who do you think keeps the restrooms clean the floors vacuumed or mopped, etc.? The maintenance and custodial staff are an essential part of keeping a facility running properly, they work hard to keep the facility in working order. According to the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education records, in 2015 the budget for Seminole State College was $11,414,062 dollars; 17.8 percent of the budget (2,022,226) went to the cost of maintenance operations. Building maintenance is a big expense that most people don’t even consider. If tuition is free where will these colleges get the money to pay these expenses? Raising taxes, that is where the money to pay for such expenses would come from. You really can’t consider it “FREE” if you are paying for it through your taxes. There is really no such thing as…

Two years of FREE community college! In theory, this sounds like a really good idea, and would give numerous people, who would otherwise not have the option to continue his education, the opportunity to get a good start on his college degree. President Obama has proposed a two year, free community college plan. in his speech given at Pellissippi State College in Knoxville, Tennessee, President Obama stated, a college education should be “as free and universal as high school is today” (Korte). High school is not free. Tax paying citizens pay for children to get a high school education. College should be more affordable for those who wish to pursue a higher education, but the President’s plan will not work; there are too many expenses that would not allow the nation to support every college student who attends a two year college. There are too many questions and concerns about offering two years of free higher education to everyone. College is not for everyone, and certainly will…

Recently, it was announced that the President is trying to make community college free for all. Most of my friends will be going to community college next year. Some are going there because it was the only option for them to further their education, others because they did not have enough financial help to go to a four-year college. So wouldn’t a free community college have a good impact on them? Supporters of this idea say that it can persuade more people to go to college and get more financial diversity into the community colleges. What they don’t see is the horrible repercussions that those effects will have in the education system that can easily deter people from getting a good education and will instead have hopeful low-income students get a mediocre education.…

Add to that problem - costs keep some people from attending. This is only bad in-as-much as it limits those individuals personally. But it's just that barrier that makes it possible for others to attend - college seats are not an unlimited resource of which we have plenty. There are only so many colleges with so many seats and more people would like to have those seats than can. If we removed the cost barrier then the competition for seats would be even greater and…
