Essay On Designer Babies
In the past year, designer babies have become a topic of interest. Designer babies are a new idea given by scientists to create the perfect baby by genetically modifying them. “The term was coined to denote children whose genetic characteristics have been artificially selected or modified to ensure specific intellectual and cosmetic characteristics”(“Introduction to Designer Babies: At Seniors.”Naff, Clayton Farris). The designer babies would have specific hair, race, eyes, etc. With the development of this new idea came the negative reactions of the public. Two sides were taken almost immediately; designer babies is a wonderful idea and designer babies will become immoral. Although the new procedure can not be kept from the public, there …show more content…
There are a larger number of negative aspects of the designer babies. Cost has two subdivisions. The cost of genetically fixing a baby and making it perfect will cost over one hundred thousand dollars on average. Another cost is the cost on the parent’s humanity. This baby will be born as a genetically changed child. Many people the child will meet in life will more than likely judge the child out of their ignorance. Parents choosing to do that to their future child will be forced to think of the cost and the judgement of the child before choosing to perfect their baby. Another negative look on designer babies is people losing their humanity. Many fear that the idea of the perfect baby existing will make all parents go through the procedure for their own benefit. If babies are only being genetically modified, there will be no baby that is born the way it was supposed to. Many believe that being born the way we are makes us special and individual. “While all animals have a nature, only humans possess ‘dignity’”(Malik Kenan, Concerns about biotechnology altering human nature are groundless). Being an individual person is what makes you a unique person. Many people cannot find the appeal of altering your baby and taking away its individuality. Many people on side B agree that the idea of designer babies lacks moral. They feel that the parents are basically engineering their child instead of letting genetics create a baby that could be perfect in the parents eyes. These people believe that only negative will come out of changing the natural way of

The author also makes it clear there are many people for designer babies; they see the positives to the “mad science”. Many families will use this after having one child with a disease and they want to be sure their next child doesn’t suffer from the same thing. People who carry genes that may cause life threatening childhood illness should be able to have healthy children if science can assist them, said an anonymous scientist. Tuhus-…

James Gallagher, a health editor for BBC News which is ranked as one of the most objective and credible U.S news sources, constructed an article called “Designer babies' debate should start, scientists say” (January 15, 2015). Within this source, Gallagher claims that leading scientists have told BBC that based on the current progress in the understanding of genetics, society needs to be prepared to come to terms with the ethics that surround the concept. In order to provide foundation for his argument, Gallagher brings up questionably unethical scenarios relating to designer babies, and adds what some scientists that work closely with genetics have to say about the topic. For instance, Gallagher added the opinion of Dr. Tony Perry, a professor…

Scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of tomorrow’s children. In the short story “Flowers for Algernon”, by Daniel Keyes, there is an intellectually disabled man named Charlie Gordon that is also going to operated on to promote his intelligence. As informed scientists are developing ways to edit the DNA of babies. That means that people are making their babies with requested traits: intelligence, eye color, athleticism, and disease prevention. They are known as designer babies. The term "designer baby" is an informal name given to a baby whose genetic makeup has been altered by means of genetic engineering. This term was originally derived from 'designer clothing ', implying that the baby has been pieced together with desired 'traits ' or characteristics according to the direction of those that hold with them the power to change a baby before it is born. This may be the parents, scientists or doctors. Currently, it is a technology in its early stages, used to screen embryos and select those with desirable traits for implantation into a mother. However, as it slowly advances and possibilities begin to reveal themselves, parties for and against have rallied about the moral rights…

My thoughts on designer babies is that it is a wonderful thing to research, but now it's crossing the line. It's amazing how we can take DNA and change it to what we like it to become, but this is someone’s life you are changing. Not only this, but this is now a rather large debate going on about this. Whether or not this practice is palatable or not. It's important to research and make amazing discoveries, but putting someone's life on the line shouldn't be something to put under the…

This article, Designer Babies, is said to be written by the Future of Human Evolution Team so some, but not all collaborators include Bradley LaChance, the executive director of the Center for Evolutionary Technologies where he researches human advancement through technological advancements. Also, Norell Hadzimichalis, who has a PhD in molecular biology and has done postdoctoral research in neuroscience labs. Her experience and education is very helpful in writing this article. In the article, both sides of the argument are presented through problems and benefits with the technology and the role it has in society is explained. First of all, the problem of what to do with the failed embryos arises. Some people believe simply discarding them is an action too similar to abortion and therefore the process of genetically engineering embryos is not ethical, but a person’s opinion ultimately determines if they are pro-choice or pro-life.…

Even with this new technology that has forever changed how we see the birth of a child, there may lie a hidden harm to the country in later years to come. It could create the degradation of ethical values which include experimenting with a human life, with the unborn child’s life at stake. As well as potentially dividing the people more by claiming a generic “idol image”; creating a superior image within the people. By following through with Designer Babies it could establish a new way of seeing the human life, it may become disposable and experimental rather than…

Without the factor of designer babies, there is already competition between who runs faster and who can play better. Although that is the reason for extra-curricular activities, the rise in competition will be an extreme amount if designer babies are thrown into the picture. The fear of having “a race of super humans” (Baird 16) will not only create competition, it will also create a more defined level of social classes because the “genetically enhanced children [will have] an advantage over the children born with the ‘luck of the draw’ genes” (Designer Babies). Another concern that some people have is that messing with the genetics of a human could damage the gene pool and have long term consequences that doctors and scientists have not yet discovered (Baird 16). Similarly, some people wonder that if this procedure was safe then why are animals dying after being genetically engineered. Even if scientists can prefect this process through animals, are multiple humans going to have to die in order for scientists to be able to do this procedure safely and efficiently? Most of these people think it is a stupid risk to jeopardize human lives in order to create “super humans” (Baird…

At the begging people will be against it, over the years people will turn over to the change but is that a good thing? If modifying a baby has its good side then it should also have it bad sides. Right now on earth we have over 7 billion people and if everybody besided to start having Designer Babies there will be no individuals why?.. Because everyone will be this extremely intelligent, mega strong non-aging human being. We are not all meant to be the same. If you have a bad gene wear your bad gene. The fact that people can make newborns in to technically robots, is something to think about. Having a Designer Baby means you can choose what your baby looks like, acts like,if they have any allergies if they look more like mom or dad if even if they look them at all. But what would that mean for our future? If all kids become Genetically Modified no one would be different we would all be the same wouldn’t it, because if we all become the ultimate human with zero flaw, there would be individuality. Im talking about shape, strength, intelligents those are all different levels in every human being on earth, if you go in and make everyone's levels has high as they can be, we would be no different than robots. “It is true that Genetic Engineering can cure many diseases but it can lead to new ones as well. How do we know for sure that mixing DNA to…

The Selection of our Future Danielle Locsin ‘Designer Babies’ and the selection of children is a new and emerging topic. I will be basing my paper on one source, Is Selection of Children Wrong by Dan W. Brock. Brock has divided the topic of selection into two parts: negative and positive selection. I will start by summarizing and analyzing Brock’s work by defining the difference between negative and positive selection and providing the expressive arguments for both. Then I will provide the five objections pertaining to both negative and positive selection: 1) That it is “playing God”; 2) that it would undermine the attitude to children as gifts to be unconditionally accepted and loved; 3) that there is no perfect child; 4) that it is eugenics…

Imagine, deciding to have a baby but instead of going to the hospital going somewhere similar to subway to “have it your way.” Designer babies give humans the ability to choose wanted characteristics for a child. Although the technology for this project is still in its first steps, today it is a possibility. Designer babies seem like a fabulous idea but it should not be worth overpopulating the world, using babies as science experiments, and only allowing the rich to create a perfect baby.…

To start off, considering a family does choose to genetically modify and separate a child from the true family line of genes can have really bad risks. The procedure in which designer babies are made outside the mother's stomach like stated before the main questions for this is "Is the baby getting enough food and nutrients?" Although, that is not the only risk. Just putting the genes inside is a risk...The embryo inside can pop causing the baby to die. On the other hand this can be justified, all birth can lead to a miscarriage natural or not. Having a designer baby or natural baby, both children will get the same kind of care to make it out safely.…

With technology advancing everyday, there are starting to become more options in which to have a child. Designer babies are becoming an increasing choice for soon to be parents. With these designer babies, they have the ability to breed the best possible child which is called eugenic engineering. Some of the advantages of designer babies are identifying diseases to a child, choosing the sex of the child and even creating the physical appearance.
