Argument Against Designer Babies

Imagine, deciding to have a baby but instead of going to the hospital going somewhere similar to subway to “have it your way.” Designer babies give humans the ability to choose wanted characteristics for a child. Although the technology for this project is still in its first steps, today it is a possibility. Designer babies seem like a fabulous idea but it should not be worth overpopulating the world, using babies as science experiments, and only allowing the rich to create a perfect baby. In fact living in a world where more than seven billion people reside, would it be worth beginning these experiments? Modifying genes could be a way of preventing unwanted traits or enhance characteristics (Against Designer Babies, Sheldon Krimsky). Unfortunately, CRISPR is a first generation tool, so there is no possibility no damage will be done to the baby. As well as no security, the baby will not have any life-threatening defects, as it is known that “curing” one disease causes another. In fact, this will create a bad relationship between parents and children (The Ethnic of ‘Designer Babies’, Tia Ghose), since the children have no choice in being modified. Using babies to alter their characteristics is using them as science experiments since there are over one hundred genes that account for each trait and fifty genes account for three percent of one gene (Against Designer Babies, Sheldon Krimsky). With the never-ending life that these experimented humans may have for them will cause the world to run out of resources and bring the economy done with it. As well as, using babies as science experiments since this research is not a full compromise that it will promise such results since the human body is very complex. The worse part is the world will once again be divided between the rich and the poor, since only the poor will be able to receive these alterations to their genes. With technology advancing many things are uncertain, but putting a stop to the human race’s obliteration is something certain. Now it is the human’s turn to decide and allow technology to divide them, destroy them, and commence war or put an end to these harmful dangers. Once again, humans can decide to alter or personalize their perfect babies which later will leave a disastrous impact on the planet or allow their children to be born the way they were meant to
