Essay On Debate Captain
I would like to be a Speech and Debate captain because I feel that I am committed to working, I yearn to teach, and I am capable of leading. In addition to the skills that I think I can offer, I also seek help benefit the team in more tangible fashions, such as through providing assistance to the new coach and giving afterschool practices more direction. Specifically, I think that as a captain I would be able to provide assistance to the new debate coach, Mike, through recruiting prospective students that Mike would otherwise have no prior connection with. Furthermore, I could also help to teach new recruits the basics and etiquette of debate and the general terminology so that they can acquire the most knowledge out of their lessons with Mike. …show more content…
First, I would advocate for the Kent team to establish an official youtube channel strictly for instructional and informational purposes. By this I mean that each event could have videos displaying recruitment material and samplings of what the events do. This portion could be to entice parents and new students. Then, there could be videos produced that show skill building techniques and perhaps digital practice methods so that even if you can’t acquire a coveted practice time slot or if you miss a debate practice, there are ways to fully take advantage of the prowess of the veteran members of the team. Next, I would initiate thursday meetings so that, at least for the debate side, assignments and lesson plans could be confirmed and delivered in accordance with the debate class so that both after school and in class students are caught up and on roughly the same page. For speech, this time could be used for speech only captain meetings to discuss the team dinner plans, assembly performance ideas or any other pressing matters that merit their

In society there are leaders for examples Presidents and Prime Ministers. These leaders need to have certain characteristics, which include respect, maintaining order, and to protect the people. When these leaders start to ignore their responsibilities the society starts to get uncontrollable and mistakes will happen. For an example when leaders ignore protection and safety their actions undermine the groups ability to function, also when leaders ignore respect their actions undermine the groups ability to function. All of this happens in the story written by William Golding Lord of the Flies. All in all when leaders ignore their responsibilities their actions undermine the groups ability to function.…

The reason I, Terrence Patrick, want to be a leader is because I feel that leading is what I was meant to do. Ever since my sixth grade year I have wanted to be a leader in any organization I could be in. At Meadowbrook Middle School I was the trombone section leader for two years which were my seventh and eighth grade years. I felt that with myself in charge of the section I would do everything in my power to better it and make it successful. I also was the president of the “Safe Ambassadors” program where I had to control and lead the group of individuals to mentor younger students. These things have encouraged me to audition…

Through the course, I learned about leadership different styles and how they emerged and developed from the Trait Theories that focus on the leader characteristics to the Goal Orientations Theories that require collaborative methods between leaders and followers. As I mentioned before, I had always linked the leadership weight to the leader leading characteristics. However, I would argue now that leadership is gained through practice and experience and it is powered through followers. As a school leader, I will use a mixture of leadership theories. First, I will build my school on an ethical basement and then, I will structure a vision that is shared between everyone in the school. At this point of my study, I believe that the type of leadership…

I’ve given my all in everything I do and demonstrated while participating in other extracurricular activities. I’m a strong speaker and I always do what I am told. I believe I have the qualifications needed to be captain for the 2010-2011 color guard season(s). I know I’ve had the experience in leading a group like this and not only have I led the guard out into a performance I’ve also taken charge in most of my extracurricular activities I’ve stage managed performances, helped in properties, and ran sound for my previous theater arts/choir performances so taking charge really won’t be something new me. I’ve learned from my previous experience, which have helped me surpass my challenges in now a day situations.…

My philosophy of leadership solely revolves around Theory Y. I believe that people like to work. There is a bit of accomplishment and satisfaction of getting up and doing something every day. I also believe that people are self-motivated. It has been said plenty times that we cannot motivate someone else. We may be able to influence their motivation, but self-motivation truly comes from within. Self-motivation towards work can be shown by the individuals getting up and actually going to work on time. If these individuals were not self-motivated, they would not go to work. They would not have career goals, they would not worry about how they are going to pay their bills, nor would they worry about how they would provide for themselves or their family. I also believe that people accept and seek responsibility.…

As a leader the thought of everyone moving at the same pace is unrealistic. Through inspiration, motivation and the acceptance of collective ideas the transformational leader will succeed during tough times. The book, ‘Secrets of special OPS leadership dare the impossible, achieve the extraordinary’ uses special operations units such as the Navy Seals, Green Berets, and Delta Forces to showcase how the military uses special leaders to tackle physical task and missions (Cohen, 2006). Similarly as special forces are required for basic errands in fight, ultra-high achievers are required for unique conditions in business: circumstances where time is imperative, when assets are low or inadequate, where you are testing standard way of thinking or set up contenders, or where emergency is up and coming. Just as elite Special Forces are needed to work high intensity missions, the modern transformational leader is needed to work at a high operations tempo and display transformational leader characteristics.…

The Great Debaters, directed by Denzel Washington, is an inspirational movie about a specific debate team overcoming racism in the segregated South. It is based off of the debate team of Wiley College, a small religious black school in East Texas, during the Great Depression in the 1930s. Under the guidance of their coach Melvin Tolson, the team kept prevailing week after week against every single opponent. They started competing with other black schools but eventually worked their way to triumph over prestigious white schools as well. Their most significant win was against the all-white Ivy League team, Harvard. With the team’s encouraging story, this movie not only inspired people to make a change, but also presented how even students can make the world of difference. Although their actions made a big difference in fighting for what they believe, the students expressing their opinions by how they would present themselves is what eventually won over the crowd in the final victory. The leadership theme portrays greatly all throughout the movie by using body language, noble examples of mentoring, and finally a student becomes a leader himself.…

Are leaders born or made? What traits do effective leaders need to possess? I’ve asked myself these questions since becoming a leader. The search for the answers only grew as I became older and placed in roles of greater responsibility. I have used my experiences to shape my own philosophy about leadership. My current leadership philosophy is that in order to be a good and effective leader, you must possess certain traits, some of which you are born with, while some you are not. Certain lucky people are natural leaders, born with the ability to take charge of a group of people and lead them in any situation, while others need to be groomed and taught over time how to be a leader. I consider myself to be a mix of the two.…

Making sense of the complexity in our behaviors, natural phenomina and our own beliefs is not an easy task. Psychology gives us a way to empirically test the complicated, interrelated and controverse topics we face in life in order to seek some correlation or truth about the world individuals experience. Psychology today was not the same as it was in the time of the early Greeks. Since the dawn of time philosophers and scholars have tirelessly aimed to decode the truths about the world around them. Ultimately, Philosophers were puzzled with the notion of relying on our senses for answers. They were captivated by a notion of deriving correct answers from what we see, feel, and experience in science. Each individual has a personal point of view on life, suggesting sensory experiences are extremely biased. Some critical thinkers oppose the idea of finding a ultimate “truth” while others welcome the notion with many “truths”, in this essay we will closely examine both sides of this argument.…

I disagree, because if your friends and or other people are trying to encourage you to do something good then it really isn't peer preasure. That is called giving good advice, or friendly encouragement. Peer pressure is when people try to encourage you or pressure you into doing something that is against your better judgement, which in most cases tends to be over something that is usually and or potencially harmful..…
