Essay on Criticism Fragments
Alexander Pope, Essay on Criticism (fragments)

First follow NATURE, and your Judgment frame
By her just Standard, which is still the same:
Unerring Nature, still divinely bright,
One clear, unchanged and Universal Light,
Life, Force, and Beauty, must to all impart,
At once the Source, and End, and Test of Art
Art from that Fund each just Supply provides,
Works without Show, and without Pomp presides:
(...)
Those RULES of old discovered, not devised,
Are Nature still, but Nature Methodized;
Nature, like Liberty, is but restrained
By the same Laws which first herself ordained.
(...)
You then whose Judgment the right Course would steer,
Know well each ANCIENT's proper Character,
His Fable, Subject, Scope in every Page,
Religion, Country, Genius of his Age:
(...)
Be Homer's Works your Study, and Delight,
Read them by Day, and meditate by Night,
Thence form your Judgment, thence your Maxims bring,
And trace the Muses upward to their Spring;
(...)
Learn hence for Ancient Rules a just Esteem;
To copy Nature is to copy Them.
(...)
True Wit is Nature to Advantage dressed,
What oft was Thought, but ne'er so well Expressed,
(...)
True Ease in Writing comes from Art, not Chance,
As those move easiest who have learned to dance,
'Tis not enough no Harshness gives Offence,
The Sound must seem an Echo to the Sense.
Soft is the Strain when Zephyr gently blows,
And the smooth Stream in smoother Numbers flows;
But when loud Surges lash the sounding Shore,
The hoarse, rough Verse should like the Torrent roar.
When Ajax strives, some Rocks' vast Weight to throw,
The Line too labours, and the Words move slow;
Not so, when swift Camilla scours the Plain,
Flies o'er th'unbending Corn, and skims along the Main.

    In The Odyssey written by Homer and translated by Richard Lattimore, several themes are made evident, conceived by the nature of the time period, and customs of the Greek people. These molded and shaped the actual flow of events and outcomes of the poem. Beliefs of this characteristic were represented by the sheer reverence towards the gods and the humanities the Greek society exhibited, and are both deeply rooted within the story.…

    An anoymous writer wrote “Literature opens a dark window on the soul, revealing more about what is bad in human nature than what is good.” This quote means that literature tells more of the bad things that people do than the the good things. This is because it is more thrilling to read about the misfortunes of someone than an a characters regular life. This quote is proven true in the two works The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne and in The Color Purple by Alice Walker.…

    An issue that plagues today's society is the ever-approaching threat of overpopulation. This problem is the one that keeps most experts on edge more than any other apocalyptic theory. Currency is limited, but the ability to reproduce is not and the issue of “how can I support a home and family on welfare” is what most in need ponder every day. The threat is not uncommon, in fact it is the same premise for Jonathan Swift’s 1729 pamphlet A Modest Proposal. My choice for choosing Swift’s piece comes from the fact that the poor and their children is still an issue that affects most of the world even today. A Modest Proposal is also rather ingenious in the fact that at the time of its publication, it went…

    “Nature” written by Ralph Waldo Emerson is not a straight forward piece of writing; on the other hand I believe that through Emerson and mankind, nature is a realization that intimates a connection between ourselves and the world around us. Both mankind himself and the world we exist in are intimately connected, because we are both God’s creations.…

    Looking at Homer’s epic similes throughout his work, The Iliad, it is easy to realize what his audience was familiar with during the time of his writing. I struggled to create my own two epic similes, noting that the most difficult aspect was choosing what to compare. When writing the imitation with Homer’s content, I knew the topic must have something to do with nature, but I found the 21st century topic selection to be must more broad. As I wrote these two epic similes, I learned the content of each simile depended greatly on the knowledge of the audience.…

    Critique Essay

    For this paper you will be writing a critique of one of the argument articles you worked with for your summary (in Writing and Reading Across the Curriculum), or you may choose an argumentative article of your own, but if you choose an article that is not from one of our books, please provide a copy of your article with your finished critique. The article you choose will need to be complex enough for you to be able to discuss it for several pages because the critique of the article should be 750-1250 words and should have a title that is not just the title of the text you are evaluating or simply the word "critique." The paper should be stapled or paper clipped together or in a folder, or I will deduct five points from the final grade because it is the writer’s job to put the paper together. Please include a photocopy or print out of the article with your finished critique if you are choosing your own article, so I can check the original article if anything in the critique is not clear to me. Finally, please include your rough draft along with the completed paper. All of these items must be turned in at the same time on the day the paper is due.…
