Reflective Essay: English Composition Class In Hocking College
Writing has never been my favorite activity. Before this class I took English Composition class in Hocking College and I had chance to write several essays about different topics. Before Hocking College I never had written an essay in English language. So going into research class did make me a little nervous. As a middle aged women , out of school for 20 years and English as a second language I am probably have a little disadvantage compared to the other kids , fresh out of highschool but I welcome the challenge and tried to do my best.
This class assignments were divided into small chunks which introduced every little nuance about the final paper. I liked the part where I could write a little about myself and get to know the other students.

Selecting the topic was easy for me. I have been interested about health, healthy eating for a while now thats why I chose my topic genetically modified organisms in which I had been interested before so I had read several books and watched some documentaries but all my previous information had come from non scientific and not peer reviewed sources therefore it was exciting for me to read all the articles in the academic journals. Also the easy part was finding the good reliable sources from academic journals because my chosen topic had many articles to choose from. That part was the most enjoyable for me and I did read a lots of articles. The week when we started to learn about APA and MLA reference styles seemed overwhelming in the beginning, so many rules but the Moodle had some great examples posted which I used a lot also my instructor wrote a comment with every grade and that helped a lot.
The annotated bibliography assignment was quite easy for me too because the week before I had done annotated bibliography homework for my psychology

My instructor’s comments were very helpful and detailed and helped me a lot to revise and correct my final draft. And my final challenge was when I had submitted my revised , polished research paper , which I had proofread over and over and when I went and looked it over in “Turn it in” program I discover that all the spacing was off and my paper on which I had been working so hard was a big mess. I am very thankful to my instructor again that she helped me to re-submit my paper.
I feel that I did great in this class and I know that I tried my best and spent many hours trying to perfect or improve my writing. The materials for this course were very helpful on the Moodle and very well put together. I did not collaborate with other students but I did enjoy reading others research papers and learned a lot in several topics what interested me like assisted suicide and essential

I am hoping that this class is extremely identical. So once again, my name is Cindy Wong and you just read an essay about my journey as a writer. I hope I was able to take you on a journey with my words into my viewpoints of various kinds of writing subjects that I learned about a couple years ago. I also included within this essay, my summary of “Inventing the University” by David Bartholomae which shows how much I have grown on the way when compared to my summary of “Shitty First Drafts” which was “shitty” compared to the one I just wrote. My writing journey will continue to be more vast and eye opening within this class and I hope to learn many new writing essentials that will be valuable in my…

The one attribute that I have had difficulty in the past for research assignments was proper citation. In other English classes that I have taken in the past, I was only given a website, OWL Purdue, to read, follow, and nothing else in the end. In this course, I was able to go in depth with learning proper citation for MLA and APA format. For one or two class session, I spent time how to properly cite my sources and build a strong reference page. Before this class, I would just simply use a website known as Knightcite that made the references for me and hoped that they were written correctly. In here, I was taught about putting the reference page in alphabetical order and even received practice so I can learn how to do the citation correctly on my…

When I started this class, I believe I had strong writing skills, and now I believe these skills have strengthened, making me a more conscious writer. Before this class, I have not focused on aspects such as sentence length and specific words that I am using. Instead, I simply wrote and worked on proper grammar. My essay writing skills have definitely improved throughout this class simply due to the fact that I spend more time writing my essays. Now that I have mastered more skills, I can utilize them in every essay from here on out. While I know that I still have room to improve, I am pleased by my progress and I feel more confident about my writing. I have always enjoyed writing essays, but this class has helped me more fully understand the complexities of writing an essay. Previously, most essays I have written have been standard for English classes, and…

When the semester began I thought to my knowledge that my writing was that of good quality. Though I had a good basic understanding of the format of an essay or letter I still had a lot to learn. My writing changed in many ways such as learning to eliminate unnecessary wording in my thesis, the use of synonyms, analyzing quotes and writing abstract to concrete thoughts or ideas. This Class not only helped enhance my writing abilities but to also better evaluate the writings of others and forced me to acknowledge the rigorous work of future courses in college.…

One of the most important assignments in a high school student’s career is the Senior Paper. This paper can decide how a student will end their senior year. Obviously, this puts a lot of stress on the student and can make this paper seem like the hardest assignment they have ever had. It is very important, therefore, for a teacher to have feedback from students on how they could make this process simpler. From personal experience, I hope to give my opinions on how well the process was handled for my class and how to improve this process for future classes.…
