Essay On Common Core State Standards
I currently teach tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade English. This means that there is a lot of information and skills to cover throughout the course of the year. I use Common Core State Standards (CCSS) to ensure that I am covering all topics and abilities that students need in order to be successful at the next grade level and to become prepared for college or career. I like having the Common Core State Standards as a guide for teaching. I know what students should be expected to achieve at each grade level. The CCSS act as an outline of general content and abilities while still allowing me control of my own classroom. This provides flexibility to arrange lessons for students in a variety of means to keep students engaged. Every lesson and objective I use in class, I relate to a Common Core State Standard. Through scaffolding, I aim to help students achieve reading skills necessary for other areas of learning as well. CCSS require a range of reading materials and complexity. Objectives of my lessons are determined be these standards and what skills students need to cover in their reading education. According to the standards, students in my grade levels should be able to analyze, cite, integrate, and evaluate various source information and elements of literature and informational text. They should have advanced past finding information to learning and understanding how that information is used in the text and how. This content and process are vital parts of reading education.
