Essay On Clinical Experience
This clinical has been a highly beneficial experience for me in my nursing career. I learned a variety of skills and have learned about myself as a nurse as well. By working with my assigned mother I learned both what my strengths and weakness are. One strength I encountered was my ability to work with the mother and all her visitors with ease. I was able to communicate effectively between all parties without making an awkward atmosphere or without losing my focus on the patient’s care. One weakness I had while working with the mother and family was not being as comfortable with working with this age of population. I am used to working with the geriatric population so transitioning to working with younger adults was a different experience. …show more content…
This was different from in class where we either just talked through what the assessment would be or where we did the assessment on a simulation newborn, which is not the same. In the future I want to further my abilities with doing an through assessment in order to monitor and care for my patients in the best way possible. Furthermore, this clinical experience showed me the importance of working as a team of providers in order to give the best care possible to the patient. I was able to see the physicians, nurses, and nursing assistant work in harmony with one another, allowing for the patient to get as much help as needed and as fast as possible. Lastly, I was able to learn how to take the knowledge I gained while in class and use it to help patient’s while in the clinical setting. I believe that it is important for nurses to not only have the knowledge but also to have the compassionate care that is needed in order to be a good nurse. I believe that the clinical at this hospital allowed me to learn what it means to be a nurse caring for new mothers, the newborns, and their families. The staff on this shift was very welcoming to any person that came on the unit and was able to give the best care to their patients. By seeing what it was like to have a good staff team that worked well with each

I was sure to do my study guide and review it before clinical, as well as completing all labor and delivery drug cards, including two extra. This helped me understand what the nurses and doctors were taking about. This clinical in L&D, which enabled me to use the wave understandings that Traywick taught to us the previous week. This helped me see how the patients were doing in relation to contractions and how the baby was responding. This was interesting and neat to have an idea of what it means instead of going throughout clinical without any insight on this.…

I felt that the approach I took was in the right way and with the right intentions set out by the NMC Code of Professional Conduct. My reflective experience was very basic I felt and did not allow for much discussion, although a lot of the experience was preparation, planning and assessing which prevented the experience to go bad in anyway. I feel that as I am a first year nursing student I am very limited in what I can do and because of this little opportunity is given to me to experience other than what I have preformed as a Health Care Assistant. on a job is quite simply learning job duties other than those you were specifically hired to perform. For example, if you are hired as a back office Medical Assistant, you will generally be expected to be able to perform front office Medical Assistant duties such as scheduling patients, calling and confirming appointments, copying files, faxing reports, referrals, and prescriptions. Basically, within the scope of your profession, it is an enormous asset to be able to perform many functions within a medical facility, especially a smaller one. People get sick, take vacations, and leave for new employment regularly, which can result in duties that are usually done by that person needing to be handled by other staff members lest…

Today I had the opportunity to redo a missed clinical date. I joined in Professor Connor’s Thursday group at RCH. I actually really enjoyed Professor Connor’s teaching style. She moved swift enough to give ample learning opportunities to all of us! I appreciated her moving so quickly as I got to administer my first injection! Not only did I administer a flu shot, but I also administered a heparin injection and an insulin injection! Professor Connors was the real MVP today. I could not believe how much of a confidence boost it was for me. I am almost happy I had to redo a missed clinical.…

Reflecting upon the last three years on this course I feel I have developed my nursing skills and knowledge to a high standard, I feel I have also changed as a person. I have had the chance to have experiences upon my placements which will remain with me throughout my nursing career, I have had the support from all my mentors whilst on practice and have thoroughly enjoyed all of my placements. I feel I have always linked theory into practice whilst on placements to ensure that I get the best from each placement. Whilst on my last placement on a neonatal unit I feel I gained the skills to care for a neonate in the future, I had the opportunity to participate in the care delivery of each individual child and family, from birth to discharge. I understand the importance of looking for vital signs in deterioration and how to effectively handle these situations. During my final placement within a neonatal unit I have experience in attending theater, for emergency and planned caesarean section and also natural delivery for babies who may require the special care unit. Looking after high dependency neonates has allowed me to understand the importance of drug errors and their effects. This placement has allowed me to have experience within complex cases including ventilation of a neonate. Throughout my nurse training I have had many successful placements and opportunities within an acute children’s ward, this has allowed me to gain skills and knowledge around complex conditions and procedures. Experiencing different placements has allowed me to develop an awareness of assessing individual needs of the patient, to ensure prioritisation of changing health requirements. I have been familiarised with local trust policies and procedures with regard to transferring high dependency patients to the correct medical facility they require. I understand the vitality of reassuring patients and their families and keeping them up to date on the care…

As a reluctant and nervous nineteen-year-old, I walked in to my first day as a nurse aid to a brightly lit, and mostly bubble gum pink Women’s Service’s unit. I worked there through nursing school; and happily accepted a job as a nurse after graduating. Nine years, and a lot of joy, tears, and learning in between, I continue to call this place my home. There is much satisfaction in being part of the continuum of care of women and families during the antepartum, labor and delivery, and the postpartum period, as well as the care of her newborn baby, and for some women, before and after gynecological surgeries. This mostly happy area of practice is not immune to tragedy, and the to have ability to be with a family and counsel them in their…

Week six was another amazing week that brought new experiences to my plate. On Wednesday evening, my clinical instructor and I ran Sr. Barn Buddies. This is a group of six teenagers that have autism. These individuals are great, but need help with appropriate social interactions and some personal care. Four boys and two girls attend the one and a half hour session every Wednesday evening. I was not really sure how to feel about doing this session because some of them can have behaviors and they are twice my size. These kids were awesome! They each seem to be somewhere different on the spectrum and all have something to offer to one another. These kids need help with socializing with each other, when they are at school or in the community. We worked on a project together, making sail boats that we could have a discussion about. If one of them needed help with part of it, they had to ask nicely. They could ask Duane or myself for help or ask one another for help. It was pretty neat to see them ask questions, offer advice and for myself to witness the positive interaction throughout the evening.…

Former President Theodore Roosevelt said “Far and away the best prize that life offers is the chance to work hard at work worth doing.” Finding that “work worth doing” has been quite the challenge for me, but I believe I have found it now. Medicine was not the first passion I sought. It was actually to become a pilot because my father used to be one. But possibly pursuing a career in the healthcare industry did come about when I was 9, after I saw pictures of my dad’s arthroscopic knee surgery and the x-ray which completely amazed me. Seeing my dad’s recovery process from such a major operation, along with multiple family members and friends become physicians themselves gave me much insight to the profession. I was able to see a knee operation similar to my dad’s while shadowing Dr. Robert Foster at Texas Orthopedics, where I was also allowed to stand right next to Dr. Foster and assist in handing him the surgical tools and listen to him telling me exactly what he is doing throughout the procedure. And then, following a morning of operating was the afternoon clinic hours at which I got to see the patient-doctor interaction happen, where I got to see assurance of recovery in the patients and trust in the doctor develop and grow. The experience only kept encouraging me to strive for a rewarding career.…
