As a result of this occurrence, Hispanics would downgrade their aspirations and question themselves. I recall the moment when I questioned my abilities about whether I belonged at UC Davis as a Biochemistry major because I believed that I was not as intelligent as the other students. I then began questioning my identity in the first two quarters in of my freshman year and thought about being part of the Chicano drop out rate. I was terrified about not doing well in my classes and losing my scholarships. However, I pushed through and learned to become more self-driven due to the support that I received from the Chicano Studies course.

For instance, some history books do not include all events that had a huge impact on American and Mexican history. As Guadalupe San Miguel Jr. asserts, “By historically ignoring, excluding, or suppressing the language and culture of Chicanos and failing to encourage the intermingling of different racial and cultural groups in the classrooms through the policy of segregation, educational authorities discouraged Mexican Americans from learning English and helped to maintain Spanish language use among Chicano students ” in Status of the Historiography of Chicano Education: A Preliminary Analysis (San Miguel Jr. 1986). However, Chicanos are not able to empower and encourage more Hispanics to attend post-secondary school, due to the bicultural restrictions because of the social changes that continue to take place from the 19th century. Courses like Chicano Studies can motivate more students to attend universities and feel welcomed as they gain support from others, learn how to cope with second-generation discrimination, and overcome economic and historical

    The history of Mexican Americans is comparable to that of African Americans: filled with stories of conquest, racism, and discriminatory acts posed by society. The past has triggered Chicanos to fight back against injustices, in hopes of reforming immoral treatment, and emerging as an equal part of America’s society.     I believe these were factors that drew them to “La Raza” studies. The opportunity to learn about their parents culture and their own roots was a great way to gain an interest in their education. Considering that over 50% of the Mexican-American students at Tuscon High School dropped out before graduating, this program was needed as a part of the solution. The problem that needed attention of the school district was the uninterest in education the students had which caused a huge dropout rate- especially with hispanic students. The graduation rate rose to the 90th percentile after this program began. In the testimonios of the students, they made statements on how their academics were not of much importance for them. For many students such as Pricila and Gilbert, school was not very interesting and they had personal and family problems to worry about other than school. For students like Crystal, she did not know of her opportunities and had a hard time transitioning into high school.
