I was able to find out about the "animal brigade" at the Richmond SPCA. It was a group for kids sixth through eighth grade that would do jobs around the facility such as cleaning cages, or walking dogs. Nothing that was very complex but simple jobs for me to start working and learning about working with animals. After a few years I heard they have a vet shadowing program where kids fourteen through eighteen can shadow a vet for a week. I was really having a hard time with my school work. Looking back on it I was probably whining too much about school when my mom told me “it’s not supposed to be easy” I never would have thought something so simply would have changed the way I look at everything I do. It opened my eyes to what I was trying to do. I was trying to be the best that I can ever be. If it was easy then every other person would do it. It was very encouraging for me because it told me I was doing what I wanted to do. I remembered how easy I was to just be good enough in eighth grade and how disappointed I was when I realized I could have done better.
