Equality: Are We There Yet?
“All men are created equal; it is only men themselves who place themselves above equality” (David Allan Coe). Since the beginning of time, men and woman were created equal, but as time passed, thoughts of surpassing one another filled the minds of everyone. People started to consider ‘success’ as being rich, having a mansion, and being on top of everyone else but that distorted view on success is not a reality. Whether you are a boy or a girl, black or white, Atheist or Christian, straight or gay, nothing gives you the right to look down on someone just because they aren’t the same as you. “It’s against what I believe,” or “what they do isn’t right!” is a commonly used excuse for degrading some simple because of their differences. Isn’t America supposed to be a free and diverse world? Ultimately it isn’t if what you desire is illegal in over half of the country. The LGBT community is striving to get a better future and opportunity for themselves and they are working at a slow and steady pace. Although, they face many hindrances, such as the Westboro Baptist Church who show no leniency when it comes to going against the bible or God’s word. Voicing out both their opinions is okay, the first amendment states it clearly, but if one is refusing to be open-minded during the whole thing, the road to a picturesque country is far ahead of us. In similar fashion, lots women are struggling to be as equal as men today. Woman’s rights have stretched since the 1700’s throughout the 21st century and we have yet to be given the respect we deserve. Men are still considered more powerful, more intelligent, and more useful in different work areas. That isn’t true, though. It all depends on the person’s determination and their mind-set. I’m not saying women should replace men and be superior to them but they should be equal and thought of in high esteem. Everyone should be seen in the same eyes.
