'Equality In Ayn Rand's Anthem'
“You have to find what sparks a light in you so that you in your own way can illuminate the world.” Oprah Winfrey often speaks about finding your own path and not allowing others to dictate your life. The story of Anthem by Ayn Rand, is the exact opposite of what Oprah stands for. Rand tells the story of a young man named Equality 7-2521, it being written from his point of view. Equality has shown to commit many “sins” throughout the course of his life. He feels as though what the council decides of his fate is a punishment for his sins, of which he is grateful. However, Equality soon wants to prove that he is scholar worthy, and that he should be promoted. He is led by the word “ego,” his thoughts and actions are to often better himself rather than the group of individuals. For this Equality has been shown to be an individual in his quest to learn for himself, as well as his need to improve his understanding of the world.
Equality 7-2521 creates an invention that he feels will benefit all those around him. However, he does this mostly because he feels that he deserves in the place of the scholars. The underlying …show more content…
This is completely wrong however, people like Equality challenge the system. It allows new development in one’s community, change is not something to be feared. Although complete control over one’s lives does limit future trouble it also leaves many to be completely clueless to what is around them. A world full of those who thrive for a common goal allows healthy competition, without competition how can one be expected to better themselves. For instance, take the two largest smartphone companies in the world; Apple and Samsung. Without one another they wouldn’t constantly be putting their best phone on the line year after year, without competition we still may even have the brick
