Equal Is Better Than Prison
What does equal mean? According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary equal means “the same for each person.” Equal means everybody deserves the same opportunities, the same chances, but also the same punishment. Equality is a right and a very fair one at that, no one deserves to escape it nor release themselves of punishment. If someone kills another person, the only equal thing is for them to be killed. The use of Capital Punishment is very needed for many reasons, it’s fair, lower cost than prison, and can most likely teach the killer and society a lesson.
The costs of the death penalty are dramatically different than the costs of housing a prisoner. The annual costs for a single prisoner are very high. A study released by NBC Right Now claims that Washington taxpayers pay $35,897 for each prisoner annually. All of that money goes towards food, shelter, health care, mental health care, clothing, and other general utilities. Prison staff salaries and the cost to build a prison are not included in this figure. Almost $36,000 for a single prisoner; now multiply that by the over 2,000,000 inmates currently imprisoned in the US- it equals over seventy one billion dollars each year. The price that taxpayers have to pay for execution is much lower than the price they have to pay for life in prison. Capital punishment is fair because they have caused so much pain and they deserve the same fate as their victim had.
