It’s where the people have a say on who leads our country and how he/she leads it. America is where men, women, black people, white people, brown people, yellow people, gays, straights, Christians and atheists all have equal rights. America is also where one has the right to speak whatever he wants to be spoken. But it is hard for one to speak and be understood if he/she does not speak, write, or comprehend Standard English.…

Before I sat down to listen to the debate, “Global Warming is Not a Crisis”, I was already interested in the idea of global warming. While many people have a hard time worrying about what might happen 100 years from now, I don’t. I considered what I already knew about global warming. I was somewhat familiar with the topics of: reducing greenhouse gases, moving the world away from fossil fuels, providing more breathable air, enhancing the quality of life, and healthy ecosystems. What I didn’t know was how easily passionate debaters could change the minds of their audience. Before the debate began, 30% of the audience was for the motion that global warming is not a crisis, after the debate that rose to 46%. While those against the motion, went from 57% before the debate, down to 42% after the debate. So, those in favor of the motion won the debate. In this paper, I will attempt to analyze the debate.…

Since the world’s origin, language has evolved to meet specific social and cultural needs. Human beings have developed manifold languages to be able to communicate and identify as a community. Louis Calvet states that language emerged therefore polygenetically, and that humankind is multilingual (23). At present, however, English is considered to be a global language, a lingua franca and a window onto the world, leaving aside other languages of major importance in the past and present. A major reason of the future of English could be a global language is that the trend of speaking English will continue going on. First of all, all the people from different non-native-English countries know that learning English at a very early age is very important because they think English could be a cornerstone of their later life. In China, lots of parents send their children to the English learning agencies since the children even can’t say Chinese fluently. It is an interesting phenomena in a country which was an ancient civilization in the past thousands of years. Chinese people put the same attentions to English as well as Chinese. That means English has been a basic skill than a curriculum, it is the same important as their native language.
