English The Contender Essay

The Contender Character Influences The character Alfred in the contender is influenced by many other characters in the book.
Alfred is influenced a lot by the characters Henry, Major, and Mr. Donatelli.

Alfred’s friend Henry influences him a lot in the book. Henry is a crippled boy about
Alfred’s age, who remains a loyal friend to Alfred throughout the book. One way Henry influences Alfred is that Henry is the reason Alfred was motivated to go to the gym.
Without Henry mentioning how Mr. Donatelli gave him a small job there, Alfred may not have even went to the gym in the first place. This would have drastically affected the story and Alfred’s life. Henry helps Alfred take that first step to start going to the gym by saying, “You ought to come up, Alfred. Willie Streeter’s training now. He’s going to fight in Madison Square Garden next week” ( ). Another way Henry influences Alfred is by always being there in times of need. An example of this is when he was there to help
Alfred after he got knocked out by Major. Henry helps Alfred train to become a contender. This has an influence on Alfred because Alfred may not have been as good as he became if it wasn’t for Henry helping him out in the gym. The last thing that Henry does that I think influences Alfred’s character is buy Alfred’s robe with his own money. I think this is really what eventually connected these too characters. Alfred realizes that
Henry really enjoyed training him and being his corner man a lot.

Another character that influences Alfred a lot is Mr. Donatelli. Mr. Donatelli is the owner of the gym that Alfred goes to and trains at. One thing Mr. Donatelli does that influences
Alfred is he shows Alfred what it really takes to accomplish any goal. He explains to
Alfred that the climb is what makes the man, not the prize at the top. I believe this is a life lesson Alfred will have with him for the rest of his life. Mr.

By the time the third battle comes around, Henry has grown into a seasoned veteran and (in my opinion) that he decided to suck it up and be a man. He proves his value and actually does something that none of the other men would do. Because of all he’d seen in battle and out of battle, such as the horror of death and war in it and well… the horror of death and war out of it, Henry was able to find what he was looking for and conquer his fears of being inferior. Through psychological trials he was able to be who he wanted to be in the end. Overall he changed, in basic terms from seeking…

In the start of the novel, Frederick Henry was into over- sensual pleasures and could not control himself until he had spent much time with Catherine and learned how to discipline himself. Henry "had drunk much wine" and roamed from whorehouse to whorehouse near the beginning of the novel. He had no control over himself nor could hold his liquor or contain himself from easy women during this time. Henry finally disciplined himself near the end of his stay at the Ospidale Maggoire. The nada concept had been a part of Henry's life from the beginning. Henry stood up nights because the night is a representation of evil and death to him. If he is not asleep, he can avoid having to deal with it. During the nights at the Ospidale Maggoire, Catherine accompanies Henry. To Henry there "was almost no difference in the night except that is was an even better time" with Catherine. Catherine has many values that transcend onto Henry at the Hospital. During the day, Henry sleeps but Catherine has to work, so she stops coming to him on nights. Henry is left to stay up, alone on nights. Also, he does not ask Catherine to come stay with him thus controlling his desires to make love to her. From this point in the book, Henry disciplines himself. During those nights together, they made love and talked. When he first saw Catherine, he was after sexual pleasures from her instead of the prostitutes in Gorizia. He never realized that he was in love until…
