Thesis: Without the character of Sheldon in Jamie Ford's Hotel on the Corner of
Bitter and Sweet, Henry would never have learned how to fight for what he wanted.
Sheldon is an important character in the book Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and
Sweet. Sheldon acts as a brother to Henry he never had who is an only child. For
Henry's whole life, he has only been able to go to his parents for help or advice. When
Henry became friends with Keiko, he needed someone else to go to for advice knowing his parents wouldn't approve. Sheldon reassured Henry that he would be there for him when he said, "'Little man ain't got no brother, so I'm his big brother, gotta look out for him'" p.56. Sheldon volunteering to be his big brother shows that he is there for him and and will support him. Sheldon is not only able to be there for Henry, but he also gives
Henry the guidance he needs in order to make his own choices.
Henry needs to understand that he can make his own decisions with a little guidance from Sheldon. In Henry’s father’s eyes, a boy becomes a man at the age of thirteen. Henry is not used to being able to do things on his own and make choices for himself. Sheldon explained to Henry, “‘You can make a man’s decision and do what you gotta do. Thats what I’d do’” p.211. When Sheldon gave him that boost, Henry was able

to do what he wanted most; he visited Keiko. Henry learned that in order to get what he wants he has to do it for himself. When Henry realizes he can make his own decisions,
Sheldon encourages him to start fixing the broken pieces in his life.
Many things in Henry’s life are starting to feel broken, and Sheldon pushes him to do what will make him happy. Henry has the power to fix these relationships with his loved ones and also deal with the broken record that has been the soundtrack to his life, but he can’t find the strength to get up and do

In the story Henry’s father stops speaking to him after he finds out about Henry’s friendship with Keiko. Henry’s mother tries to go along with her husband, but she still acknowledges Henry’s existence by bringing him letters from Keiko and making his favorite foods. In the text it says, “After a few days his mother did acknowledge his existence, in her own way. She did his laundry and packed him a lunch” (Ford 186). This shows that even though she knows that Henry has disobeyed his father and done something unforgivable, she still loves him and is willing to take care of him. His father has completely shut him out. She is willing to go against him to help…

Regarding Henry was a movie with a tremendous amount of id, ego and superego examples. A strong example of an id scene was at the beginning of the story when Henry forgot his keys after his wife told him not to forget them. He walked right passed them and out the door forgetting them. This shows his unawareness of his surroundings and priorities. An id is the most basic part of our personality that wants instant gratification for wants and needs. Being so eager to get out the door, he does not complete a basic everyday task that he even was reminded about. Another example of an id scene in the story is when Henry is sitting down talking with a coworker shortly after being released from help. He has a drink in his hand and in a very business situation drinks the whole glass all at once almost like a child would. This id scene shows no filter with getting what the personality wants instead of…

Sheldon is a theoretical physicist at Caltech, having earned his B.S., M.S., M.A., Ph.D., and Sc.D. He lives with his roommate and Caltech colleague, Leonard Hofstadter, an experimental physicist. Having lived together for 10 years, the two have become best friends. The two are usually hanging out with their two friends, Raj, an Astrophysicist at Caltech, and Howard. Howard is an engineer at Caltech with his masters from MIT but no doctorate, which Sheldon rarely fails to capitalize on. Sheldon undermines his work and accomplishments, which he often does to everyone in the group. They also hang out with Penny, Leonard and Sheldon’s, neighbor across the hall, in their apartment. Penny is a waitress, with dreams of becoming an actress. Sheldon is always saying what an awful actress Penny is and critiquing her waitressing skills, as the group would dine where she worked.…

When Henry gives Clare a list of all the days and times that he will be visiting Clare over the course of years, she longs for his visits. “Today isn’t a Henry day; the next one is twenty-two days away… All my life I have pretty much just accepted Henry as no big deal; that is although Henry is a secret and therefore automatically fascinating…” She knows exactly how many days away it is until Henry comes for another visit; on any ordinary day. It is almost like she lives from visit to visit, and she feels stronger every time he comes. When Clare is 13, she is in the meadow, in the middle of a storm, thinking of Henry: “…I suddenly feel that Henry is there, an incredible need for Henry to be there and to put his hands on me even while it seems to me that Henry is the rain and I am alone and wanting him.” Clare is only 13 and already feels so close to Henry that she can feel him…
