Reading as defined by Webster dictionary is “the action of reading written or printed matter silently or aloud. Many young people are no longer interested in reading; whether it is a physical book or an electronic book. There are many different things young people get involved with which contributes to the lack of reading they do. There are interested in technological things like television, computers, cellular phones and video games. Many are easily distracted with what is going on the outside whether it is hanging out with friends or going to the club. Some of them even think it is time consuming and boring. There are many reasons why young people are no longer interested in reading.
One reason for the lack of reading is the improvement of technology. A majority of young people today have televisions at home. The advances of this technological device have encouraged more people to use this median for information gathering as opposed to reading. A common anecdote among the youth when asked about if they have read particular books is “I have watched that movie”. Then there is the computer, they are many different things that can be done on the computer. They can visit the internet; they can play games, listen to music and have conversations with their friends via Skype and instant message. Cellular phones also help play a major role in the lack of reading. Cellular phones come in all different sizes, shapes and colors of distraction.
