English 101 Reflection
Writing Reflection As the fall 2013 semester comes to a close, it is time reflect on my experience that I had in completing English 049. Having taken the English placement test many years ago, and scored well enough for English 101 honors, I felt confident that I would once again be placed in at least in English 101. My self-assessment and over confidence was proven to be incorrect this time I took the placement test. At first, I felt disappointed in the fact that I thought that I would have scored better than I had. Now as I reflect on the experience, I am certainly pleased with the experience having taken the 049 class in lieu of 101 at this juncture in my education. The placement test proved that I needed a review of the basics and …show more content…
It has been many years since I had started to earn a degree, then I began a career and a family, and never went back to finish completing a degree. The construction industry was hit particularly hard during the great recession and it hit me exceptionally hard. I found myself going from having many employees and building commercial buildings to doing handyman type of work just to feed the kids. Never being able to sit down while faced with a challenge; I chose to finally complete that elusive degree that I had started so many years ago. My motivation that I have used get through college is that additional education, as well as completing a degree, may be just the edge I need to excel once again in my chosen industry. With a little effort and long hours at the computer, I am nearing the end of the journey to receiving an AA in business. The experiences that I had in English through school as a child had instilled a certain level of anxiety of taking a college level course. Consequently, I put off completing the English requirement to the very end, a move that I now regret. A transformation has occurred: I once was apprehensive about writing, but surprising to me, I now truly enjoy …show more content…
Unless writing had been for crafting a proposal or a homework assignment, I have been able to nearly avoid writing for virtually a lifetime. Recently, near the end of September, I had one of those milestone birthdays. It is said, as birthdays go, it is better to have low expectations so one is not disappointed in the outcome – how true that rang this year. Apparently, my family had heard of this saying regarding birthdays as well, seemingly unaware of the passing milestone. As the evening came to a close, I found myself at my computer writing. Yes, writing - that was not a typo, I was merely writing for the cathartic effects of putting feelings, thoughts, and reflections into written words. By no means was this exercise a rough draft of an award winning piece, but a reflection of my 5th birthday and the excitement that I felt as a boy for the wonderment of what life would bring me next year as I was about to enter kindergarten. In reality, not much has changed for me; regardless of the bumps and bruises along the way, I still look forward with anticipation as to how the future will unfold before

Armin Greder’s ‘The Island’ is a picture book published August 2007, explores the negative aspects of belonging through alienation an outsider’s perspective of not belonging. The text uncovers an undesirable experience particularly the migrant experience. It follows a strange man entering a foreign island where he is unwelcomed and quickly judged based on his appearance. The cover of the book shows an intimating barrier around the island, which looks, dark and uninviting. This wall is a metaphor of the attitudes given off by the islanders towards the man, which are also unapproachable and unpleasant. This effect brings about the feelings of alienation experienced by the man, reflecting the negative aspects of belonging to a group or community. Throughout the text the islanders are drawn additionally threatening, as they are large, dark and armed. This is contrasted with the man’s petite frame and lack of clothing leaving him vulnerable and abnormal. Through this use of size and colour a direct link can be made between the man’s inability to belong and his distinctive appearance. This portrays to the audience how much society impacts a person’s experience of belonging or not belonging. Within the text, the islander’s attitude towards the man is prejudice and hostile. As the islanders say “I’m sure he wouldn’t like it here, so far away from his own kind”, negative connotations are revealed in the words “own kind”. This immediately tells the audience that this man is unlike the rest of society, displaying the effect of appearance on a person’s ability to assimilate into a new surrounding.…

Today, I am a graduate of CUNY Baruch College with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Operations Management. Although undeniably rewarding, the road to graduation was, to say the least, strenuous. When I began the pursuit of an undergraduate degree, I was determined on becoming an accountant. However, instead of solidifying my interest in this major, the demanding curriculum along with being employed full time took a toll on my GPA. As a result, I came to the realization that…

I am fluent in French, but that's not going to do me any good. I can read the handwriting on the wall. Mexicans are prouder of their heritage than Americans are which means English will soon become a dead language. So next week I'm going out to San Diego State and see if I can enroll in just one class for starters - Spanish 101. I'm telling you, if you've got kids get them into Spanish classes…

English 101 however, helped me improved the areas in which I was weak in from high school. Before, it was difficult to find the bigger meaning of an article, poem, or any form of writing in general. However, with the help from taking this course I was able to figure out how to add meaning to the essay. I also learned how to add evidence and analysis them better in my body paragraphs as well. It was difficult in the past, but now I gained skills such as outlining, writing rough drafts and the organization needed for a successful essay. I hope in English 102 that I will use my English 101 skills and be even more skilled in my essay writing. I also hope to learn more about adding evidence within the paragraphs and honing in the essay to make it all flow together. Also in English 102 I hope that I will learn to be more confident with my essays. I have talked in a couple of assignments where my confidence makes me question whether or not to add certain analysis into essays which sometimes may have made my grade not as good as it could have been. In English 102, I hope I will not question myself as much and show more confidence. I also wish to eliminate repetition in English 102. I have received many comments that I repeat my analysis a lot and that also cuts of some points of my grade. I need to continue the analysis more rather than just repeat it in a different way. With these two core English classes that I have/will take, I know that my foundation in writing will be…

This is my second year at Winthrop. I transferred from Western Carolina University, and their English 101 class is like this course. It was about perfecting argument style writing, so I feel as though this class will partially feel like a repeat for me. However, we did not focus on learning to read, think, and write critically. I do believe this class will help with all of that, especially with reading. A lot of the time when I read, I feel like I am not understanding or comprehending what the author is saying very well. This could be due to lack of reading in the past several years, but also because of my lack of comprehension and critical reading skills.…

Going for my undergraduate degree was a tough and long road. I knew at some point if I wanted to advance in my job, I would have to go back to school to get my undergraduate degree. In the beginning I knew I wanted to become a CPA. After going to the Community College and receiving my associates in Accounting, I decided that becoming a CPA was not for me. I took some time off and went about life. It wasn’t until years later I returned to school. At the time I didn’t know what I wanted to do, I just knew that I didn’t want a degree in Accounting.…

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step” (Lao Tzu). My journey and current academic goal is to be an accountant. Fortunately, I have been able to live at home and work part time while taking classes at Northern Virginia Community College (NVCC). Balancing school and work has been both challenging and rewarding. Working has enabled me to receive a paycheck, become more confident, gain more independence, and exhibit exceptional time management skills. Attending NVCC has given me the academic courses, strength and knowledge needed to propel me on to my future goals. Both school and work together has made it difficult to execute my best in school. This school year I made the decision that I could no longer work part time…

Coming to the University of Alabama, I knew that I had to take English 101, English Composition and I dreaded it since I have always been a poor writer. Throughout my entire career as a student, I always worried about upcoming writing assignments. Stressing about such assignments would delay my motivational drive to write and led to procrastination and poor performance on assignments due to writing under a time crunch. Instead of dread, taking English 101 turned out to be a great benefit since now writing is no longer the all-encompassing black hole of fear that it once was.…

During this English 111 class I have learned how to become a better writer and how to plan out my essays before I write them. My attendance in the class I think has been well, I was always in class unless I had an emergency or illness. I rate myself in my attendance an 8 because I would always come unless I had a reason not to. I was active in class discussions most of the time and kept up with doing my lessons. In being active in class discussions I rate myself as a 7 because I could have participated more than I did and been more interactive in the discussions we had. I would most of the time come to class prepared, but sometimes I would leave my computer at home, but the class would have computers for people without a computer to use. I would rate myself a 6 in this area because I always forget things and losing stuff and need to improve mostly in this area.…

Earning a 5 on the AP English Language and Composition Exam was my most memorable experience in English. The test required three hours of multiple choice questions and timed essays, and it left me feeling both exhausted and validated. While passing the test was a serious accomplishment, it was not an isolated act. Much of my growth and success came before the exam, rather than after it. I attribute my score to a year of hard work and learning in my AP English class, which greatly enriched my life.…

Last year I took English Composition One through Itawamba Community College's online program. When I signed up for the class I was nervous that I would not do well. Many of my friends had told me that the class was mainly a writing class, and I would need to be a strong writer to do well in it. I have always loved writing, and my writing is typically strong. I had not had an English class that focused on writing in years though. Despite how I felt in the beginning, I ended the class with a grade I was proud of, I overcame my struggle with commas, and I learned that when I took the time to proofread papers, I was rather good at finding the little errors that would have otherwise been missed.…

In my opinion, I have learned well the all concepts we have studied in this English 107 class throughout the 2015 fall semester. In this final assignment I am revising my first essay I wrote in this class. The reason why I chose my first essay to revise is because this was my first essay I have ever written in college, and now that I almost finished my first semester of college I want to look back to see what I wrote and compare myself how I improved in terms of a writer. In addition, because my major requires a lot of writing skill, by analyzing my own essay will definitely help me with my future writing assignments and career.…

My Journey in English 100-002 has been interesting and informative, but it got a bit challenging at times. I can say that it was a great learning experience, that I will use to succeed in the future and while attending college to earn my degree. I learned that English is a very important course to master in order to learn how to communicate, express your thoughts, and ideas with others. First and foremost, I was taught how to use correct grammar and punctuation with interesting learning exercises throughout the entire semester. I also learned how to write different forms of writing to complete an essay such as a, narrative, argument, and a persuasive essay using the writing process. I was also taught how to become…
