Plagiarism undervalues the work of both of the researchers and students, who gather information for themselves, and work to their full capability to give credit where credit is due. Katrina here is guilty of unintentional plagiarism as she likely does not know how to cite sources properly, and has a rather limited definition as to what plagiarism truly is. Unless she gives proper credit, she is guilty of embezzlement and intellectual dishonestly. The passage she included into her work cannot be considered common knowledge; even though her work is paraphrased from the original text, it is professional courtesy to accredit the author of the original work. In this case, an indirect quotation will suffice so that she is not guilty of academic dishonesty, or an inclusion of the author and sourced work at the beginning of her paragraph, followed by a correct citation following MLA format. In accordance with C. Hugh Holman’s A Handbook to Literature, we know that Middle English refers to the type of English that people used in the time period after the Norman Conquest and coming before the Modern English age that begins with the Renaissance.
