Psychology of Addiction
Summer U1C, 2014
Instructions for Essay [35% of Course Mark]
Due Date: 28/1/2014

A single, 1000 word essay must be submitted through the Turnitin portal on the
Moodle site for the course, Psychology of Addiction, by 5pm [local Sydney time] on the 28th January 2014.

The title of the essay is:
What causes addiction, and what is the best approach to counteract it?
The essay should seek to construct a persuasive argument based upon a selection of key empirical evidence, rather than offer a general description of facts. Quality of essays will be judged on the integration of evidence with persuasive argument.
Formatting and referencing is to be done using APA style.
The essay is worth 35% of the overall course mark. Late submissions will be penalized with a mark of 0, so make sure you submit well ahead of the deadline to avoid last minute complications. The 1000 word limit is very strict, and there will be a 5% penalty for going over, plus a further 5% penalty for every 50 words thereafter. Thus, an essay of 1300 words would receive a mark of 0.
Because of the tight word limit, and the broad range of possible answers, you must select a subset of the available evidence to consider. Such focus on a subset of material is welcomed, but must be justified as part of your answer. In-text citations form part of the word count. Citations can be in any standard format employed by scientific journals
(including number format which has a lower word count). The bibliography itself does not form part of the word count, nor does the title or other peripherals such as your name and student ID number.
Formatting and referencing is to be done using APA style.
Note:
- Special consideration requests to waive a late penalty should be made through the
Special Consideration Online service on MyUNSW, unless you are registered with
SEADU. Please contact the course coordinator, Marios Panayi, if you intend to make a SEADU or a

As early as 1939 with the publication of the first edition of the Big Book of Alcoholics Anonymous the medical community was aware that addiction was more than a moral shortcoming. In the first addition of the book in the chapter The Doctor’s Opinion, Dr. William Silkworth (1939) wrote the following, “We believe, and so suggested a few years ago, that the action of alcohol on these chronic alcoholics is a manifestation of an allergy; that the phenomenon of craving is limited to this class and never occurs in the average temperate drinker. These allergic types can never safely use alcohol in any form at all; and once having formed the habit and found they cannot break it, once having lost their self-confidence, their reliance upon things human, their problems pile up on them and become astonishingly difficult to solve” CITATION Alc76 \p xxvi \n \y \t \l 1033 (p. xxvi). This paper will examine the problems associated with addiction, the definition of addiction and treatment for addiction.…

On November 9, 2010, my best friend was pronounced dead due to asphyxiation caused by a drug overdose. Desmond Miller Harris was one of the thousands of people in the United States who died in the year 2010 from a drug overdose. Depending on the person and the situation, losing a loved one to drugs can impact people in several different ways and on multiple different levels. Some people move on quickly and are not affected in any way while others are stuck in a deep depression. This depression can cause some people to spiral out of control and lose who they once were. Others assess the situation and improve themselves as individuals. Watching my friend deteriorate while feeling hopeless to help him is something I will not likely ever forget. This traumatic happening is beneficial to me due to its effects on my life, which made me realize the impact that drugs have on us, who my true friends are, and what I want to do with my future.…
