Elizabeth Barret Brownings the Cry of the Children
Browning used repetition in her poem The Cry of the Children to show the pain, and suffering that children had to go through as they were forced to work. She was in distraught about the sad faces of the children who were forced to work in mines and factories, and decided to make a political point by writing The Cry of the Children against the enslavement of children. She uses repetition to get the thoughts in the mind of the reader to point out the signs in order to stop the enslavement of children. She did a great job in capturing the horrific cruelty of child enslavement, by using a sorrowful theme, and repetition as a literary device to lead to an extraordinary poem. After the exploitation of England enslaving children, Elizabeth Barrett Browning wanted to capture the pain, suffering, and sorrow of the children that were forced to work in the factories and the mines. She asks the question, “Do ye hear the children weeping, O my brothers, Ere the sorrow comes with years?” as if to ask them why they hadn’t heard the cries of the children earlier and set out for an investigation. She explains how children should have been living by using animals as examples: “The young birds are chirping in the nest,” represents the children to be safely home, and “The young fawns are playing with the shadows,” represents the children that were to be out playing around with other children. Elizabeth Barrett Browning does this later in the next stanza, but this time she compares the tears that are falling down the children’s cheeks to the sadness that is felt with time that, like sand in an hour glass, slowly drips away till there is no more. She, again, uses other objects to represent how the children were feeling to give an effect that everyone can understand. She uses, “The old man may weep for his to-morrow Which is lost in Long Ago,” to represent the children who cry.     The poem is set in Sydney on busy day that has been disturbed by the weeping of a single man. Repetition is used to enhance the fact that, “No one can stop him,”, as the Narrator describes. It becomes apparent that the reason his crying is not stopped is simply because of the way he cries, not with shame or pity, but with a mature dignity that stops any one from stopping him.     Gwen Harwood, An Australian poet who, seems to develop an imaginative, rich form of poetry through the use of recurring themes, complex language techniques and even further through the use of sophisticated structures only seen in the most prestigious of poems in the modern era. Gwen Harwood has a tendency to write poetry that is significant in all eras, cultures and/or societies of the world as she captures, and develops them into a strong universal theme that recurs strongly. These themes seem to endure, and portray the human experience by relating these in forms that resonate through a range of various environments; these poems have an immense structural integrity. These themes are depicted powerfully in poems such as; Father and Child, Violets the 2 poems that I have chosen to discuss in this speech. In the Father and child, it has a unique structure of 2 parts; the 1st (Barn Owl) discusses her loss of innocence in the daughter’s perspective in the past, the second part (Nightfall) Being the downfall to her father, how he is put in an degenerative state, slowly falling to his demise. This is to do with Gwen accepting the inevitability of her father’s death. These 2 poems can be read symbiotically in a dual nature to provide further insight into both their poems, or separately as a poem. The language in the first poem is quite unique. It highlights the use of very simple words, with little complexity, this can be interpreted to show the innocence that the child still possesses, as children (better yet an innocent child) are meant to speak with less complexity than a full grown adult. These sentences also tend to be monosyllabic. ‘I knew my prize, who swooped home at this hour’ are all monosyllabic. As the poem continues, especially after the owl is shot, the child’s vocabulary seems to improve in complexity, losing its monosyllabic nature.     The second part of the poem ‘Nightfall’ continues the story of the child forty years from ‘Barn owl’, where she had lost her innocence by shooting an owl and this had resulted in a heavy hearted guilt which was caused by her unknowing and stubborn actions. The poem represents death closing in on the father, and the limitations of time on their relationship that was never experienced before in her younger years. The father, who in the first poem is depicted as an “old no-sayer”, is now held in high esteem, he is admired and respected as an “old king”. The extended metaphor “Since there is no more to taste ripeness is plainly all. Father we pick our last fruits of the temporal.” Appeals to our senses and is now an aural metaphor, it illustrates the father’s life becoming fulfilled or ripe, it has come near to its end and the father and child will now spend or pick the last moments of the father’s life together. Over time her appreciation of her father has changed, this is shown through “Who can be what you were?” and “Old King, your marvellous journey’s done.” She has realised the valuable life her father has led and the great loss that will be felt after he is gone.     The poem “Father and Child” by Gwen Harwood shows Harwood’s father teaching her the concepts of life and death, from when she is a young child in “Barn Owl” up to when she is around forty at the time of his death in “Nightfall”, coming to accept the idea that life is not never-ending. In part one called “Barn Owl”; she has learnt to accept death as a component of life. The persona of the poem experiences a loss of innocence with the discovery of the tragedy of death. Before shooting the owl, the child believes they are the “master of life and death,” with the noun, “master,” reflecting the power that the child feels and the ignorance that the child has about the nature of death. This description of the child is later contrasted in the fourth stanza, “I watched, afraid by the fallen gun, a lonely child who believed death clean and final, not this obscene bundle of stuff.” The emotive term, “afraid,” represents the change in the persona’s attitude after being exposed to the harsh reality that is mortality. However, the rhyme and last line “what sorrows in the end, no words, no tears can mend” releases an element of inexpressible sadness that she has towards the death of her father showing that although she accepts death, it still upsets her as it did in “Barn Owl”.     The structure in this poem gives us a feeling of the old man’s desperation to dig up another story first portraying his uncomfort, “The man rubs his chin, scratches his ear.” His anxiousness escalates, “soon, he thinks, the boy will give up on his father.” You see his attitude further rise when he says, “he sees the day this boy will go.     The male persona discovers the child’ death at the beginning of the poem which symbolises catalyses the ‘death’ of a couples marriage. This is supported by, “no, from the time when one is sick to death, … and things they understand”. The cynical tone of this phrase exemplifies the conflict of understanding as their method of expressing grief is different to one another. This is strengthened by the truncated sentences and silted dialogue, “‘Just that I see.’ ‘You don’t.’ she challenged” where the responder realises that the man only discovers the physical purpose of Amy’s misery. The confronting nature of discovery allows the female persona to challenge the male personas perspective. It is significant to note the physical structure of the poem with truncates sentences which emphasise the distance between the husband and wife whereby the husband has accepted the death of his child as he says, “little graveyard where my people are”. The negative connotation and allows the responder to realise that the male persona has discovered through a renewed perception. This also accentuates the conflict in their relationship as the male persona physically discovers instead of emotionally like Amy.     Usually, children’s nursery stories and songs have words that correspond in sound. Rhymes are typically in more with Mother Goose tales, than in a recollection of one’s dead wife. Thus, the rhyming in the poem suggests the Duke doesn’t take the death of late Duchess very seriously and with much grief. The fact that lines 43-46, “Oh sir, she smiled, no doubt,/Whene’er I passed her; but who passed without/Much the same smile. This grew: I gave commands/Then all smiles stopped together.
