Little Boy Crying & Rising Five Essay

Little Boy Crying by Mervyn Morris and Rising Five written by Norman Nicholson are both about young boys growing up and describing their world to us. They both do this through the use of metaphors, similes, repetition and allusion. They both portray the idea differently but the meanings are the same, the fact that we must learn life lessons. The theme of growing up is also portrayed throughout the poems.
In the poem "Rising Five" written by Norman Nicholson, Nicholson portrays the idea of growing up through verbal language features such as repetition and simile's. An example of this would be the repetition of the words "not" and "rising". This gives us the impression that the young boy is looking at the present negatively and looking towards the future too much. Another example of this would be the quote "we drop our youth behind us like a boy throwing away his toffee wrappers". This gives us the impression of how carelessly the boy is throwing away his youth and so are we. Nicholson teaches us here that we should live life to the fullest as you never know when your life could end.
In the poem "Little Boy Crying" written by Mervyn Morris, Morris portrays the theme of growing up and learning life lessons. Melvyn Morris does this throughout the poem using verbal language features such as allusion "the ogre towers above you, that grim giant" this gives us the impression of how the boy feels about his father. The little boy describes his father in the only way he can, through fairytales. It also shows the harshness of the boy's feelings for his father. Another example would be "you must not make a plaything of the rain" this example means that the little boy must learn his life lessons and not make use of his tears to get what he desires and to get out of situations. Morris teaches us in the poem that we can't always get what we want through tears and we must learn life lessons if we want to succeed in the future as we learn

    The poem is set in Sydney on busy day that has been disturbed by the weeping of a single man. Repetition is used to enhance the fact that, “No one can stop him,”, as the Narrator describes. It becomes apparent that the reason his crying is not stopped is simply because of the way he cries, not with shame or pity, but with a mature dignity that stops any one from stopping him.     Margaret Atwood uses different uses of figurative language to make her viewpoints realistic and easy to understand. The poem starts off with a strong metaphor that is connecting birth to the accident. The author is using the way her son has recently died, in a river, to describe how a river is the cycle of life. He has crossed the river into birth and if he crosses the river again it would be into death. In the second stanza the son’s birth is described as a life full of success to come, it is then followed with how since he is now dead his life will now be a “voyage of discovery.” This means that his life was once an open opportunity but now will forever be unknown for what he could have been. In the ninth stanza there is another metaphor as the mother begins to look back on the things that have happened to her. She says how “My foot has hit rock,” meaning that she has hit rock bottom in her life and will forever be in pain. Throughout the poem the author uses similes, such as in lines twenty eight and twenty nine, “I planted him in this country like a flag.” In this simile she is saying how no matter someone's age they can leave an impact on the world. The death of the young boy has left an impact on the mother’s life forever. Personification is another example of figurative language that is used within this poem.     The poem starts out with a sentence that catches the reader’s attention, “Whatever the difference, it all began.” This is implying that something new is about to start and make a positive impact for the speaker’s life. I know the impact is going to be positive from the next line when he says, “face-to-face like lovers”. The use of the simile at the end of the second line shows how passionate the speaker is towards his ”four-day-old” son. Imagery is used in the third line when the child’s “smile dawned on him”, it portrays his smile which lit up his face causing his father to pitch back with the exact same smile.     The poem “Father and Child” by Gwen Harwood shows Harwood’s father teaching her the concepts of life and death, from when she is a young child in “Barn Owl” up to when she is around forty at the time of his death in “Nightfall”, coming to accept the idea that life is not never-ending. In part one called “Barn Owl”; she has learnt to accept death as a component of life. The persona of the poem experiences a loss of innocence with the discovery of the tragedy of death. Before shooting the owl, the child believes they are the “master of life and death,” with the noun, “master,” reflecting the power that the child feels and the ignorance that the child has about the nature of death. This description of the child is later contrasted in the fourth stanza, “I watched, afraid by the fallen gun, a lonely child who believed death clean and final, not this obscene bundle of stuff.” The emotive term, “afraid,” represents the change in the persona’s attitude after being exposed to the harsh reality that is mortality. However, the rhyme and last line “what sorrows in the end, no words, no tears can mend” releases an element of inexpressible sadness that she has towards the death of her father showing that although she accepts death, it still upsets her as it did in “Barn Owl”. Father and Child” Nightfall” is more metaphorical and symbolic suggesting a more mature persona like an adult.     As with any form of dialogue, whether it is a story or even just conversation, using specific words helps convey a meaning and helps the listeners understand. “Boys enter the house, boys enter the house” (Moody) is by far the most said thing in the whole story, but for good reason. As the boys come in and out of the house, this is a representation of them aging. With each entrance they have grown either physically or they have become more mature. Their maturation through entering the house is displayed towards the end of the story when he says the “Boys hold open the threshold, [the] awesome threshold” (Moody). This threshold is a metaphor for something like some sort of gateway. Each time this gateway is traversed there is a new level of boy that is coming through it. Showing them aging in this manner allows readers to look back at their memories of growing up and make connections to themselves.
