I wanted to bring to your attention some issues that I had about a professor in the school of social work, J. Breezer Rickey. I had her for SOWK 370 this fall. As a social worker, I feel that her sense of empathy for her students is not present in her daily interactions with students. She has made several rude comments to me (which I have attached as a PDF to this email), and those comments have made my self-esteem go down a considerable amount. A social worker should life people up, not bring them down, as is the situation here.…

Social workers help people with their lives in a variety of contexts. They can work with families where there is domestic abuse, in situations of child abuse, with children and people with disabilities, assist with fostering or adoption and work with young people who misuse substances such as drugs or alcohol. According to The Sefton Local Safeguarding Children Board, the UN Convention states that young people have rights such as the right to life, the right to be treated as equal citizens, the right to live in a safe environment, the right to be educated without fear, and the right to be protected from abuse and neglect.…

The career that I have chosen to pursue is that of a Child, Family, and School Social Worker. The nature of work is to provide social services and assistance to enhance the social and psychological functioning of children and their families and to increase the family welfare and the scholastic performance of children. At times, these social workers may help parents, as well as, plan adoptions, and find foster homes for neglected, abused or abandoned children. In schools, they direct their attention to issues and concerns such as teenage pregnancy, misbehavior and truancy. They may also suggest to teachers different ways to approach and solve such problems. The duties of a child, family, and school social worker are to consult individuals, groups of people such as families and even communities in regard to issues which include child care, medical care, mental health, unemployment, poverty, physical abuse, substance abuse and rehabilitation. They interview people individually, in families or different types of groups in order to properly evaluate their situations, competency, and obstacles and therefore decide what services are necessary to meet their needs. Once the issues are established, they refer clients to community resources for services such as job placement, financial debt consulting, legal aid, housing, financial assistance, and provide solid information such as where one should go and how one should apply. Social workers serve as mediators between students, schools, homes, family services, child guidance clinics, protective services, courts, doctors and other connections to aid children who are faced with problems such as disabilities, abuse, or poverty. If a parent has child rearing problems these social workers counsel them by interviewing the child and family in order to conclude if further action is required. In addition to counseling parents in child rearing, social workers advise parents as well as teachers and other school…

I attended a session of the Child Abuse Conference on Thursday morning at 8:45 called “JAYC Foundation: Managing the Stress of Traumatic Cases.” The presenters included Dr. Rebecca Bailey, Cynthia Psaila, and Jaycee Dugard herself. This seminar was all about knowing what you yourself can handle when working a case. It was geared more towards those viewing in the social work field, since both of the speakers were in the social work business themselves. A little bit of background on Dr. Rebecca Bailey – she was the woman who took on Jaycee Dugard after her 18-year kidnapping. Cynthia only recently (within the last 5 years) came into Rebecca Bailey’s practice and became part of her social work team.…

Personal Statement of Elisa Hernandez Social work for me is to advocate for repressed people by providing a service to seek greater social justice. It means to empower clients with a challenging situation by redirecting their focus on their abilities to empower themselves and suggest a new perspective on a problem by breaking down a solution into smaller and achievable steps. One value of social work is competence, prepared and able to help an individual by providing resources while recognizing the capability and client's integrity to choose the best action he/she feels is in their best interest. Another crucial value in social work is to aid the client in building a…

The difficult part was the service users that I worked with had their own diverse values and that is where I experienced some tensions and dilemmas as to what was the right thing to be doing came up. Different people had different views on what creates risk. In my position as a Social Worker it needs the ability to identify and balance values of benefits and harms, taking into consideration where one’s own value base impacts on the decision making and where we can support people to achieve the best outcomes, using professional rather than personal values. However we are guided by the purpose of the organisation we are employed in, as well as the legal and policy parameters of our society. Additionally, it would appear that the focus of social…
