The First Day 9-10
Will is literally writing about an ant that he sees on the floor. It could also represent a teenager, such as Will, who is vulnerable to everyone because of low self-esteem or the way people think of him.
Katie 11-13
Will has done many weird things in the past like shoving raisins up his nose, catching lice to “study their gestation”, and testing the lick the fence theory and ended up peeling off his tongue skin.
Katie thinks of Will as a smart person, who does weird things that other kids don’t usually do. Even though many people see him as an outcast, Katie sees the good things in Will and his love for insects. Katie also understands Will’s life and his reason for everything he does.
We learn that Katie’s family has a trouble of its own, her father has cancer.
We know that Shane is a mean bully who makes everyone feel bad for his own pleasure. We know this because of the way he treated and spoke to Martin.
Devan 14-16
Devan’s perception of Shane and Katie’s perception of Shane are very different. Devan sees Shane’s acts of bullying humorous while Katie sees it as plain mean. Devan thinks of Shane as a funny guy, who is pretty cool to hang around with while Katie thinks of Shane as a bully.
Devan sees Shane’s interaction with Martin as a normal thing and he blames Martin, not Shane, for the incident.
Shane squashes and kills the ant, which upsets Will.
Katie 17-18
Katie’s little step back tells Shane that she is intimidated by him.
Katie is a bystander in the circle of bullying at the start of the scene.
Near the end, she is the one who stood up for Will and took action.

First of all, Katie thought of the idea of building a unique ant farm for the science fair that would have provided them first place if it weren’t for Shane and Brad demolishing their project. Second of all, in the beginning of the novel, Katie thought of a smart idea of stop Devan, Shane, and Brad troubling Will, by diverting their attention by chatting about bad luck and about the bug Shane squashed. “That’s bad luck, squashing a bug like that” (P.17) Finally, the novel itself stated Katie was bright. “Katie McGillvray, straight-A student and all-around rule follower.” (P.31) Therefore, justifying why Katie is a genius.…

So, it was an accident. And I mean about as “accidental” as you can get, too. He was riding his bike. Like Mick wasn’t riding crazy. Or dodging in and out of traffic. And his hands were on the handlebars. His front tire hit a rock. And he skidded into the back of a passing truck, and that was it. He wasn’t wearing his helmet. He said it made him look like a “doofus.” And not looking like a doofus was pretty important to Mick, actually. It’s not that he’s conceited. It’s just that when he was eight, my mom made the mistake of showing him his christening gown, and he never really got over it.…

The suspect’s alibi was stated that he arrived home at approximately 10:00 and then had a telephone conversation until 10:20; his location previous to his arrival time was at a friend’s house who agrees with this statement. His alibi can be proven untruthful with the given evidence. Eye witnesses at the crime scene had seen the suspect in his vehicle at approximately 10:15 (during the crime). Investigators realized that it would take one 30 minutes to travel from the crime scene to the suspects home. When investigators arrived at his house at approximately 11:00 they took temperature readings of his engine and then additional temperature readings 10 minutes later. The initial temperature reading was at 150 and the second was at 130, usual running temperature for this vehicle is at 200. Through mathematics we found that the if the suspects alibi was true the vehicles temperature should have been at 93 not 150 when investigators arrived there. Through additional mathematics the vehicle was found to be stopped running about 17 minutes before…

Anyone who has ever attended high school can instantly relate to the word “Bully”, whether its memories of being bullied by someone or being the bully yourself. Everyone knows to look out for him, but for the most part, once you have been picked to be the one being bullied, you might as well paint a bull’s-eye on your back. John Bender’s character does precisely that, he’s not exactly friendly with everyone else in the group, but his main target throughout the movie is Claire. The “popular girl” is John’s favorite target because of her lifestyle and upbringing, which reminds him of all the things that are wrong with his life. While picking on Claire, at times he shows some feelings for her but they are mixed in with his general angst towards her. Even with the anger and constant rude remarks towards Claire, John’s character finally “heals” to portray his real feelings towards her in the end.…

To begin with, Kate Morrison is plagued by the guilt of her bother, Matt’s broken dreams. As a consequence, the guilt causes many emotional problems in her life. For instance, the constant mental pressures of guilt causes Kate’s “crisis” during one of her zoology lectures. “Because if things had turned out differently, it would have been Matt standing in front of them” (Lawson, pg. 200). During a lecture, Kate has a flashback about a childhood visit to the ponds with Matt. It is clear that Kate feels guilty for leaving Matt, who was her idol as well as her brother, behind. He taught her not only to see nature but to observe and understand it; and Kate feels that it is injustice that she should be teaching others when Matt taught her “everything” she knows. Furthermore, Katie is always in an emotional battle with her own mind due to the guilt she felt for Matt’s situation. “I had betrayed him, that was how I felt” (Lawson, pg. 201). Even though she knows Matt had caused his own demise, deep inside her mind, she feels that it was her own fault. This feeling causes her to fight with herself. Her situation shows that Kate could never come to terms with what had happened to her family and what had become of the Morrison dream. Finally, Kate’s guilt causes her to lose communication with Matt, which hurts their relationship. “What are you actually researching Kate? I don’t think you’ve ever said” (Lawson, pg. 274). It is plainly obvious that Matt is interested in…

We do not know if Martin has a mother but if he does not that is probably why Martin’s dad is so rude and mean to him. In line(168-170) it reads, “Afraid to be on the elevator alone?” his father said, with a look of scorne. “Grow up Martin.” the door slammed. That emphasizes how his dad now may be thinking Martin is a coward and can not do anything right or handle anything like an adult. Martin’s dad already does not like how he acts and we can tell this in the next thing he says, “Not only are you skinny, weak, and bad at sports, but you are also a…
