Effective Leadership in Leon Band

Leadership Essay
Leadership is defined as ‘the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal’. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and cohesive behavior. A leader infuses a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. Therefore for a person to be a successful leader they need to work hard to accomplish their goal and influence others to do the same. For greatest success and communication with their hierarchy they must be trustworthy and responsible. In addition, the person needs to be nice and approachable so that they can interact with others and are as approachable as possible. Although a leader must be approachable they still need to discipline their group or section in appropriate ways so that they may show respect and pride for the band. Outside of the marching field or classroom a leader needs to maintain integrity, work hard, stay away from bad habits and represent themselves and Leon Band to the best of their ability.
In my opinion, I was a successful leader this year and I qualify again this year. During the whole year I worked hard in my position as a leader and had the motivation to continue pushing myself to reach perfection. Also, during marching season I maintained a positive attitude and pushed my section to be the best group that they can be in marching band. I practiced my music and marching outside of rehearsals so that we could spend more learning time as a whole; along with this I encouraged my section to do the same and ensured that they were achieving at a higher level each practice. When it came time to do pass-offs I was the person that new their part. Whenever, others were nervous to do pass- offs, needed reassurance during practicing or needed the extra push be successful I was there every day helping them: during lunch, after school, on the weekends and even on the phone. I would work hard to stand up and help to the best of my ability even

Leadership is defined as the process in which an individual influences the group of individuals to attain a common goal. The goal is attained by mutual cooperation and behavior. A leader has a sense of positivity and directs others to reach the specified goal. In The Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps, (JROTC) the leaders teach us how to become better leaders. They also teach us to build character and leadership by providing guidance and putting us cadets in a position that we are not accustomed to. This helps us adapt to new types of things. We also have to set the example for the school, especially when we wear our uniforms. When we put on that uniform it means we are to be a leader. People watch us because we have the uniform on and they know we are a part of JROTC therefore they expect more out of us. A leader is someone who stands not only for their cause but takes responsibility and motivates other individuals also. There is a difference between being a boss and a leader. A leader is a motivation for others and inspires individuals to aim higher and attain that aim. However, a boss only supervises over his inferiors. Power naturally comes to a leader but power has to be earned by a boss. The best leaders are those who can lead and direct without misuse of their power. They must be able to inspire others in a direction or greater good. They must be strong enough to stand firm in decision making and leading others without a selfish attitude. In order to be a successful leader it is essential to have good character. You must have honesty, confidence, communication, and commitment. You have to have honesty because if someone is doing something wrong you need to be able to have honest feedback. You need communication because you need to be able to command your platoon. You need to have commitment because you need to stick with it and create a relationship with your platoon so you, and they, will feel more…

I am a leader. I have all the qualities that make a great leader, but I was not born this way.Experiences and how someone reacts to those experiences are what truly make a leader. One of the most influential experiences I have gone through is called the Lebanon High School Marching Band. I am certain that I wouldn’t be who I am today if it weren’t for marching band. Before coming to high school I already had leadership qualities, but band helped bring all those great qualities together and helped me get past my two major flaws: my lack of self-confidence and the fact that I was probably one of the shyest people you would EVER meet. When I joined marching band, I spent most of my waking hours sweating and suffering alongside wonderful people that I longed to…

I was a part of the Newnan High School Marching Band my tenth, eleventh, and twelfth grade year. It was a great experience. The Newnan High School Band became like a second family, and the band room was my home away from home. As it got closer to my senior year, I started wondering who was going to get the title of clarinet section leader my last year of marching band. I felt like I would be the one for the job. When they finally informed us that leadership applications were available, I was excited to get my application. I wrote an essay and prepared for my interview. I knew I had the qualities they were expecting in a section leader. I was kind to others, hardworking, friendly, helpful, understanding, and approachable. I anxiously anticipated…

Being a leader for a large group means more than just a title. As co-drum major of my high school marching band, I had to use leadership to help the group has had to overcome. The title bears numerous responsibilities and in various styles, but choosing to lead by example while having a sense of humor has shown as the most effective way of leading for me. Performing as a marching band requires lots of dedication and hard work; however, when the group starts lacking in motivation to progress, a leader must step in. For the group to overcome these issues,we had to get together and discuss what was keeping the group from progressing. Leading by example is not enough for a group to follow, sometimes it requires actual action as well. I use my sense…

Being an effective section leader means being willing to make sacrifices, and above all to be a hard worker and to strive for nothing but the best for yourself and your peers. I have a lot of experience in leadership roles, because I was Vice President of my NJHS class and for the past two summers, I have volunteered to supervise and guide first and second graders at Vacation Bible School. I also have played soccer since I was about four years old, and have played club and select soccer since about fifth grade. In both seventh and eighth grade, I played basketball and volleyball on the A team and participated in track and cross country. Being a part of these teams has given me a great experience in leadership roles and the way I have to act…

Being a part of this band has in itself been a memorable experiance, an experiance i would not trade for the world. However this past year I lost hope in band and was actually really close to quitting band all together. I had forgotten why i was a part of marching band with the stress of my school work and frustration over my tiredness in cross country. But when we played at our lakeshore competition i felt something that i had never before felt in the band. I had walked of the feild with what felt like a runner's high, only difference is that I had just marched in arguably the most epic performance i have ever been a part of. I have to thank that feeling i got at the end of the show for the reason i am applying for leadership, and that is…

Leadership as a concept or notion lends itself easily to myriad definitions. Manning and Curtis (2012) describes leadership as the social influence that results from the capacity to initiate ideas and deeds that others can follow. A leader often stands in front of others and they follow in his footsteps. According to Hopen (2010), “leadership is the capacity to guide or direct others” (p.4). To Fulwiler (2005), leadership is the ability to make people do what they normally would not do or go to places they normally would not go. Leadership can also be defined as the…
