Effective Communication Self Assessment Paper
Effective communication remains a critical leadership skill which requiring constant effort. The sender and the receiver share responsibility in making the message clear. According to Baack (2012, Ch. 2.3), excellent communication results from careful preparation and situation sensitivity by the sender and receiver in any context. Despite best efforts, communications often get lost in translation. With that in mind, learning ways to improve communication skills is very beneficial. Consequently, an assessment of my personal communication skills will be analyzed to determine deficiencies, where improvements are required.

The communication gaps revealed by the results are emotional awareness and building relationships, respectively. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the capacity of an individual to define his own emotions and to become sensitive to those that he perceives from the environment and the circle of people he is interacting with (Mahanta, 2015). My Emotional Intelligence results at 57% signify that although I have some good relationships, others are more difficult. Accordingly, developing a better awareness of emotions and understanding why you and others behave in certain ways will enhance your interpersonal skills (Interpersonal Skills Self-Assessment, 2016). Furthermore, my Communication in Group results at 47%, though indicative of average, is lower that I want. According to Paulson (2011), a person’s ability to work collaboratively, think critically, and solve problems is an important hiring consideration. Based on the answers of my assessment, you are likely to handle most group situations adequately, although you may well be nervous in some situations (Interpersonal Skills Self-Assessment,
