Business Growth through Effective Communication

In every business, effective communication is an essential part of business growth and success. Without effective communication, business performance would be hindered. There could be conflicts and misunderstandings. Misunderstanding could happen among employees, clients, and everyone else you come into contact with on a daily basis. Practicing effective communication skills in the workplace reduces the level of stress and frustration. Also, it creates a more positive atmosphere among employers and employees. To execute effective communication, you must use the preferred communication channels when dealing with different people of differing cultural background; this is called “Intercultural Communication” (Kelly, Mcgowen, Williams, 2104, p. 125-126). There is a time to talk and a time to listen to what others have to say. A few months ago while working, my manager suspected that I accidentally put up a wrong display price for a particular product that was on sale. A customer bought the merchandise, but the price came up wrong at the register. The customer made a complaint to the store manager about the wrong price being displayed; by her tone of voice, she seemed very upset. The store manager apologized for the inconvenience and said that the situation would be handled immediately. My department manager was upset after the store manager told him about the current situation, so he came and talked to me about it. At that time, I wasn’t sure about what I did wrong until he explained it to me. You could tell he was upset by his facial expression, but he still managed to maintain composure while talking to me. He invited me to his office to finish the conversation about what I did wrong. I think he did the right thing by talking to me in a private

An organizational model, also called an organizational structure, defines an organization through its framework, including lines of authority, communications, duties and resource allocations. A model is driven by the organization’s goals and serves as the context in which processes operate and business is done. The ideal model depends on the nature of the business and the challenges it faces. In turn, the model determines the number of employees needed and their required skill sets. An organizational model is summarized in an organizational chart and regularly analyzed by management (Chinn, Dianne).…

During a conversation the store manager brought up our last meeting that was attended by him, Stephanie and myself, he looked at me and said "I was not going to win" meaning I was going to be demoted, my return conversation was that I did not want to rehash our last meeting and that this was not about winning and that I only wanted to have a fair and balanced outcome. I felt as if this was a personal attack and that he had made it his goal to see me demoted. In my opinion this communication was very unprofessional.…

The District manager would come in almost every month for a store checkup. We were supposed to be doing things weekly to avoid getting behind, but with this management nothing really got done. The District manager would come and there would be prices from the last month still on items. Items wouldn’t be on the shelves and still in the back from the night before. He would observe customers asking if we had certain things in stock and no one would know because it was a mess in the back. After the second time the District manager came to the store he was so fed up he just walked out.…

As the store owner promoted John to be a manager, then they had seen qualities that he is qualified to be a manger which indicates he knows what’s best for the store. The owners hired George because they believed in John which means that he is a reliable and good employee. George shouldn’t speak up because he is a new employee. George should wait for more time and find concrete evidence rather than making a quick judgement now. Since the owner trusts John and promoted him as a manager, therefore, it’s not like John is doing anything wrong. Seeing that john is a trustworthy worker, it will be hard to believe he is doing anything to harm the store.…

My child ends up coming down the tunnel slide, crying his eyes out....and through his tears, he told me the younger child had hit him with the belt, 5 Times, on his head. One of the two women (I assume the child with the belt, was with Grandma, and Mom), came into the playground, and took the belt away, but she still let the child continue to play. My son and I left the playground, and I went to find a manager to say what had just happened, before we left the restaurant. I assumed they would like to know, that a child was running around with a belt, hitting other children, in the playground. A male manager came over to me (I don't remember his name). I told him what had just happened...my son got hit in the head 5 Times, by a child running around with a belt, in the playground. What response did I get? "Well, I can't go policing that playground, and the kids in it!" and "We can't do anything about that." Really?? He/The manager eventually Begrudgingly told me that he would go speak with the adults. I was Not asking him to "police the playground"! I was expecting a "That's too bad that happened!…

During the conversation between Ron Davis – the relatively new general manager of the machine tooling group at Parker Manufacturing and Mike – a plant manager who reported to Ron, Ron had violated some principles of supportive communication and supportive listening. First of all, Ron had violated Descriptive and Problem-Oriented principles. For example, Ron expressed his thinking and opinion about what Mike did and stated Mike’s personalities: “I think you’re too chummy with some of your female personnel” or “I think you’re creating a substandard impression by not wearing a tie” and “Having things in disarray reflects poorly on you.” Ron also violated Validating and Supportive Listening principle. For instance, Ron said he felt strongly about the issues he had mentioned regardless of Mike’s opinions and need Mike to correct.…

In the past, I was an interim manager / cashier at a convenience gas station. At the time my manager was training me on how to maintain and update daily inventory electronically. My manager’s way of training was verbal lectures on how to keep track of inventory on the computer and make orders as oppose to actually showing me step by step, while trying and lecturing. So by reflective observation, I kept to myself and figured it was easy from the way he had instructed. To my disbelief I was unable to do the inventory after he left because his instruction on what I should click on or not to get into a certain section was visually different from logical thinking. I was so embarrassed to call him back to the store so I sat in the office for a little over an hour assimilating. Unfortunately, no…

This was on Sunday around 2:00pm and there was a handful of people in the store. I am very familiar to this mall and the culture around it. At times this location can get somewhat shady, so it was a completely different environment than the Target at Dublin. This would be my second round of breaking the social norm, store etiquette. I wasn't as nervous as I was in Dublin because I didn't stand out from the crowd. I confidently walked in there knowing my objectives. When I started criticizing the clothes in a loud manner, and throwing them on the floor I got occasional stares and glances. People seemed to ignore how I was acting in the store, which encouraged me to do it more to try to get some sort of reaction. I was baffled that not one worker was nearby either organizing or putting an item back in its place. After ten minutes, of failing to get anyone's attention I stopped making a mess and tried fixing everything I dropped. I believe people in Bayfair weren't surprised by this disruptive behavior because people having loud outbursts and tantrums is a new social norm. It's common in this environment to stay in your business and for others to stay out which avoids problems. In fact, I was more shocked than that I wasn't getting critiqued for my actions. I believe this norm of store etiquette was created as a way to show mutual respect for those who work in stores and a way for us to show…

Two months ago I was asked to attend a Family Forum meeting at my current place of work. These provide an opportunity for friends/relatives to come together with several staff members (including a manager) every month to discuss any developments within the service, or any other business affecting them and their family members. Once everything on the agenda was covered, I took my cue to highlight the topic of activities within the Nursing Home. This was a good opportunity to ask family members if they had any new requests for activities for their relative living within the Nursing Home. Almost instantly the manager chairing the meeting replied that she thought there was more than enough being done in…

Working in the automotive repair industry taught me empathy, as most people arriving at a repair shop feel distressed, unhappy, and not anticipating their day to be ruined. One story involved a customer who had $1200 in repair work done at another Pep Boys location. She returned a week later after her vehicle’s engine seized, which that management told her that they would not be liable or required to refund for the work done. The location’s refusal advanced the customer to make a complaint to the corporate office. However, the complaint inadvertently made it to my location, as I had the capability to forward it back to corporate and rejected it, but did not as I saw the company as a whole. Under communication with my boss, I took over the dispute and called the customer. I right away realized the other location failed the lady and did not properly explain her vehicle’s issues. I gave her a full refund out of my location for the amount she paid knowing I was making the right decision. The customer ended up writing a long letter to corporate thanking me and my location for helping her. She returned many times after to my location, spending more than $1500 on just tires and alignment. Situations like that taught me that solving disputes takes empathy and an understanding of what caused the dispute while encasing the decisions around want is reasonable, fair, and…

atish was a Sales Manager for Industrial Products Company in City branch. A week ago,he was promoted and shifted to Head Office as Deputy Manager - Product Management for adivision of products which he was not very familiar with. Three days ago, the company VP -Mr. George, convened a meeting of all Product Managers. Satish's new boss (ProductManager Ketan) was not able to attend due to some other preoccupation. Hence, theMarketing Director, Preet - asked Satish to attend the meeting as this would give him anexposure into his new role.At the beginning of the meeting, Preet introduced Satish very briefly to the VP. The meetingstarted with an address from the VP and soon it got into a series of questions from him toevery Product Manager. George, of course, was pretty thorough with every single product of the company and he was known to be pushy and a blunt veteran in the field. Most of theProduct Managers were very clear of George's ways of working and had thoroughly preparedfor the meeting and were giving to the point answers. George then started with Satish.Satish being new to the product, was quite confused and fared miserably.Preet immediately understood that George had possibly failed to remember that Satish wasnew to the job. He thought of interrupting George's questioning and giving a discretereminder that Satish was new. But by that time, George who was pretty upset with the lackof preparation by Satish made a public statement "Gentlemen, you are witnessing here anexample of sloppy work and this can't be excused".Now Preet was in two minds - should he interrupt George and tell him that Satish is new inthat position OR should he wait till the end of the meeting and tell George privately. Preetchose the second option.Satish was visibly angry at the treatment meted out by George but he also chose to keep…

Yes! scolding her. He said she was been ungrateful, that hasn’t she noticed that the price of plantain is going up and this was not plantain season, that if it were in a developed nation that she wouldn’t see the plantain chips at all, that they trying to help and she is still complaining. The CEO further said that he knew that there was no salt and pepper in the Plantain chips and continued on and on. My friend mentioned to him that she studied agricultural science and understands all he was trying to explain but asked that wouldn’t it be better to produce fewer packs with quality than reduce their quality. He went on by saying that if she really studied agricultural science that she would have understood what he was trying to say and kept on talking. She had a knock on the door them put the phone on speaker walked out of the office to receive a mail packaged and on returning noticed that he was still talking not even noticing that she had stepped out. He further continued until she told him that she had to go and switched off the phone. I couldn’t believe my ears. She said she didn’t either. It would have been easier to believe if the line manager did this and not the CEO. I was…
