1. We have described power as the capacity to cause change and influence the degree of actual change in a targets behavior. Ho Ching’s power as a leader has been recognized by many but would you describe Ho Ching as an influential leader? Why?

Ho Ching could be viewed as an influential leader by the way she is recognized in the text. She was ranked 18th for Asia’s Most Powerful Business People and was ranked 24th for Forbes Most Powerful Women. She graduated from a prestigious University and is shy and humble but seems to be good at what she does. As a female in Asia she influences so many others to stand out and make a difference because women are not really held to the highest regard in Asia. There is a divide when it comes to men; women are not equals to them in Asia.
2. Based on the excerpt from Ho Ching’s speech, what type of tactics does she use to influence the behavior of others? Ho Ching remains humble even though she is married to a prime minister. She addresses that has no relevance to where she has gone in her career. She married into a wealthy family but it does not affect the way that she runs the company. She also had the financial reports for the company released to the public so others could see the performance the company was making. Ho Ching is very influential just for the simple fact that what she has accomplished has never been done before.

3. Ho Ching has been named one of the most powerful leaders in Asia. What are her major sources of power? Ho Ching’s power comes from Expert power because she is trained and very skillful in what she does, referent power because she is very relatable and has a lot of respect from her peers and coworkers and legitimate power because not only is she skillful but she is also trusted to be placed in a high position of power and fulfills her position well.

    Within the novel, Uncle Chinh has been portrayed as an epitome of communism. Duong Thu Huong constructed this character as a dependable figure with an unfriendly nature. “He was intoxicated with himself. His satisfaction was that of a creeping parasitic vine.” (Hang, page 26). In order to represent the hypocrisy of Uncle Chinh, Duong Thu Huong promoted the relationship between Uncle Chinh and Que as a relationship similar to an authority figure and a peasant struggling to thrive in the 20th century North Vietnamese communist government. Uncle Chinh’s aggressive tone of voice was a technique used by the Huong to represent his magnitude of dominance over Que, creating their hierarchal relationship.
