“I 'VE COME TO THE FRIGHTENING CONCLUSION THAT I AM THE DECISIVE ELEMENT. IT 'S MY
DAILY MOOD THAT MAKES THE WEATHER. AS A PARENT OR TEACHER, I POSSESS A TREMENDOUS
POWER TO MAKE A CHILD 'S LIFE MISERABLE OR JOYOUS. I CAN BE A TOOL OF TORTURE OR AN
INSTRUMENT OF INSPIRATION. I CAN HUMILIATE OR HUMOR, HURT OR HEAL. IN ALL
SITUATIONS, IT IS MY RESPONSE THAT DECIDES WHETHER A CRISIS WILL BE ESCALATED OR DEESCALATED AND A CHILD HUMANIZED OR DE-HUMANIZED.”
-DR. HAIM GINOTT

COMMON CHILD
BEHAVIORS
How to positively counteract unpleasant and challenging child behaviors
Temper tantrums are very common occurrences in child behavior especially in the first years of life. Temper tantrums are reactions that children display because they are not yet fully equipped to express their feelings in positive and mature ways. Toddlers are just learning how to communicate effectively and their ability to express frustrations are commonly displayed through tantrums.

To avoid and reduce tantrums it is important to maintain patience and consistency in not giving into the child. In order to promote non-tantrum behaviors it is best to find reasonable compromises and allow the child to make mature independent choices. For example if a child wants to bring a toy and you the parent do not want it brought into an establishment make a “deal with the child by prompting them to make a choice. Say
You can either bring a toy and leave it in the car

According to some societies, it is viewed as presumption to allow for a child to decide for themselves, while most of us may appreciate some sense of respect for the uniqueness of the child; by allowing some autonomy in decisions made by the child. For instance, in a Wintu Indian’s society, when a child asks “Can I?” they are actually seeking for clarification on a certain custom (Lee, 1956). Instead of having an external time schedule for their children, they provide food when they are hungry. By this, they do not exercise permissiveness, but profound respect for the child’s individual worth alongside their uniqueness (Lee,…

Mind-set is important for being successful in college. Mind-set helps students to get high achievers in the school and life and make them across the challenges. In the article“The Secret to Raising Successful Kids” by Carol Dweck, we read “our studies show that teaching people to have a “growth mind-set,” which encourages a focus on “process” (consisting of personal effort and effective strategies) rather than on intelligence or talent, helps make them into high achievers in school and in life.” Dweck explained that students need to know the courses when they do the challenges. Take my cousin as an example, he is a high school student. He is a smart student in school, but he cannot get high score for the test. He afraid doing the test and I…
