Eating Christmas In The Kalahari Analysis
Jolene Vanderpool Professor Rice
ANTH 1200
30 September 2011

Americans view Christmas as a time to give and appreciate everything we have had in the year and to celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, but it can also be seen as a selfish holiday as we ask for presents from our loved ones. The essay, “Eating Christmas in the Kalahari” by Richard Borshay Lee explains that you cannot take what is said and done to you as a reflection of your personal views if you do not take the time to think about the way those words and actions affect you. We can learn many things about our culture if we reflect on the cultures of others around the world. This is essay offers the reader a chance to explore how a different culture celebrates a holiday in a similar but very different way than Americans.

Christmas is a holiday celebrated around the world. Children wait all night the evening before for santa to place their gifts beneath the tree. Excitement rages from them the morning of December twenty-fifth; pretty wrapping paper and shiny bows glisten under the christmas tree lights while the bulbs upon it sparkle so elegantly. However, Christmas is not about all these aspects that it is displayed as. Christmas has more meaning than pretty gifts and how many gifts each child has under the tree. This holiday is above the amount of money one kid gets while the next gets so little. Though some see Christmas as a materialistic holiday, it has far more depth than so little meaning. Christmas wasn’t always the popular holiday it is today. In fact, the well known puritans, in the 1600s actually banned it out of disgust and anger. Christmas nowadays is heralded, by most, as a joyous holiday. Those who don’t celebrate Christmas, but celebrate a different holiday around this time are still consumed by the beauty of the wintery season. However, some Americans do not celebrate Christmas- or any holidays for that matter and in fact look down on them as useless and frivolous in a Scrooge-like manner. It is perhaps from the puritans that this intolerance of holidays stems, just as the joy from Christmas comes from The Christmas Carol, by Dickens and religion. The Ban on Christmas in 17th century Puritan New England shaped the attitudes towards the…

Winston Churchill once said, “Christmas is a season not only of rejoicing but of reflection.” As the big day draws near, it is important to reflect on the roots of the global holiday as well as the direction in which it is heading. Christmas is a tradition rooted deep in the history of western society. It has undergone many changes since it’s earliest celebrations. Even today, the holiday is constantly changing. Each year brings new innovations to Christmas. In the dawn of the holiday, it was minor and focused on the birth of Jesus, the light of the world. In the 19th century, Christmas was a time of family and goodwill to mankind. Today, though there still remains aspects of religion and selflessness, more than ever it has become a holiday consumed by commercialism. It is a development that is not likely to go way any time soon.…

Egalitarian or customs and believes that maintain equal approach to resources and leadership among the food forager society is called social leveling mechanism. In the article Eating Christmas in the Kalahari, Richard Lee talks about the Kung Bushmen way of practicing social leveling mechanism, which is shown by two clear ways. These ways are publicly ridiculed and in the other manner they show no signs of gratitude and thankfulness. For example, when hunting for a large animal for the Christmas feast, Kung Bushmen does not allow the hunter to act as a chief or the leader because this might cause that individual to treat others as inferiors. Moreover, this act is encouraged in their culture in order to avoid conflicts between individuals in their society. Based on their beliefs, they ridiculed and disrespected Richard Lee for hunting an ox. However, they used this strategy to prevent Lee’s thoughts from any feeling of empowerment or authority compare to the other Bushmen. On the other hand, this master plan will allow the other Bushmen to avoid feeling inferior.…

Sadly, we do not have the luxury of visiting our relatives every year but, we have gone twice during Christmas and New Year, and Christmas was celebrated quite differently. During these trips I learned a lot about my heritage and the importance of tradition. You don’t hear the words Santa Claus, and children don’t receive presents on Christmas Day. Instead, we celebrate Dia de los Reyes, or Three Kings’ Day which is celebrated on January 6th .This special holiday commemorates the three wise men who traveled a distance to bring gifts for the infant baby Jesus. Aside from this holiday, we also participated in las posadas, it is a reenactment of Mary and Joseph’s arrival in Bethlehem, performed just before Christmas. Young adults perform these reenactments as they ride on donkey in the rancho, searching for hospitality. Once they are turned away three times, the entire community gathers together at the local church for warm bowls of pozole and mugs of chocolate (Mexican hot chocolate). This reenactment is crucial to our tradition as it is performed several times leading up to Christmas. During my stay in Mexico and participating in all these holidays I learned that there is much more to life than receiving the most gifts during the holidays. My stay there taught me to be humble and to value the important…

The Christmas holiday throughout the 20th Century and presently until today, has been an integral part of the U.S. economy. Commercial exploitation of Christmas has been systematic and thorough (Barnett, 84). This means that corporations and retailers spend millions of dollars each year to promote their products during the holiday season in a variety of different ways. For example, Christmas commercials for various department stores being aired during primetime television shows when they know most people are home watching television.…

I also found it fascinating that in order to study the hunting and gathering methods of the !Kung, Richard Lee would not provide them with any food or assistance even though the Bushmen “rarely had a day’s supply of food on hand.” Although this approach gave him the most accurate data the Bushmen looked at him as a white “miser” (Lee 1). In order to repay them for teaching him about their culture for the past year, he decides to buy a nice ox for the Christmas feast in December. He buys the biggest most beautiful ox he…
