Dylan Roof Case Study
Your standpoint on the Dylan Roof case is that he should not get the death penalty. Although I do not know your reasoning behind why he should not be given the death penalty, I can tell you some of the reasons why you should give Dylan Roof the death penalty. But first, let me recap on the crimes that Dylan Roof has committed. He has shot nine out of the 12 people in Charleston Church in South Carolina. These people welcomed Dylan Roof into their church in hope to teach him about the faith of Christianity. They trusted a complete stranger into their church, despite the fact that they lived in a town where racism was prominent. And as if this was not enough, he shot some of them multiple times and yelled racial slurs at them. By the looks of

The case, of which I choose to present, is that of Emmet Till. In the summer of 1955, 14-year-old African-American Emmett Till had gone on vacation from Chicago to visit family in Mississippi. He was shopping at a store owned which was owned by Roy and Carolyn Bryant and someone said that Emmett Till whistled at Mrs. Bryant, a white woman. At some point around August 28, Emmett Till was kidnapped, beaten, shot in the head, had a large metal fan tied to his neck with barbed wire, and was thrown into the Tallahatchie River. His body was soon recovered, and an investigation was opened. It took less than four weeks for the case to go to trial; Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam were accused of the murder of which an all-white, all male…

The arguments for the death penalty consists of Americans feeling a strong sense of justice that demands retribution for heinous crimes, or ‘a life for a life’. The death penalty shows that society doesn’t excuse the taking of innocent lives and that a jail sentence for murder wouldn’t be suffice for the life of an innocent victim. Arguments against the death penalty involve people who believe it is applied unequally, because a large proportion of those executed have been poor, uneducated, and nonwhite. My outlook on it is that I’m in-between the death penalty, yes I understand that a murder should be able to live on this Earth, but having to kill by something like legal injection is an unusual…

My view upon death penalty before watching the video about Darryl hunt’s case, was strongly against it. I truly believe that we have no say in who is to take someone’s life. Who are we to decide who lives or dies? There is no standard that we can place on someone’s life, to determine their existence in this world. Life is a precious gift, no matter how cruel the crime may be that the person being accused of committing the crime. I strongly believe that incarceration for the reminder of their life is in my view, the most extreme decision as a society to make in determining an individuals future.…

In the article written by Patricia Hill Collins entitled “On Lynchings,” Collins describes the life of Ida B Wells through theoretical frameworks such as Black intellectual production and Black Feminist Thought. Collins situates Wells’ lived experience as a catalyst for her activism. “Ida Wells-Barnett’s voice in these essays grows from lived experience with Black people, and not simply from theorizing about them.” (182 Collins) Wells’ intellectual and political work, as told by Collins, involved the development of African American communities through a “racial uplift.” (176 Collins) Though Collins work focuses on Wells political achievement, at the same time, Collins expresses how narratives are silenced throughout the retelling of history especially the work from Black intellectuals in particular Wells.…

“Jesse James” is a biography written about the old western legend known as none other than the American Outlaw Jesse James. This biography was written by T.J. Stiles, who is an award-winning American Biographer. The biography dives into the life of the American Outlaw and reassessed his life focusing on more along the lines of his personal life and the historical role he played, rather than his superstar status as a rebel. Stiles in the biography mentions James as more of a family avenger than a robin hood. “All the things that happened to him on his family’s farms lead him unto the life of crime” and Stiles opens that up for us in ways we haven’t seen before. This book received multiple awards for the thoroughness…

In his essay Death and Justice, Edward Koch argues in support of capital punishment, he believes it is just and it saves lives. He successfully delivers an argument laced with true and vivid examples of unforgettable murderous events. His intended audience consists of the opposing voters and readers of the New Republic, the political magazine that published his essay. Prior to reading Edward Koch’s essay I was sure that I would disagree but it became clear to me that he is right. There are seven commonly held views against the death penalty that Koch argues against in his essay. In what follows I discuss a few of his arguments and show that the death penalty is the most viable approach to deal with convicted murderers.…
