Little Miss Sunshine (2006) was directed by Jonathan Dayton and Valerie Faris and is an American road-comedy that shatters the mold. Incredibly satirical and ironic yet, is how deeply human as the Hover family is one of the most endearing in recent film history. The film has a fabulous beginning in which you meet each Hoover individually, pointing out their great differences, during their personal moments through a series of montage shots. The daughter Olive inches away from the television screen intently reviewing pervious Miss America winners, the drug-addicted grandfather in the bathroom snorting heroine, the father out pitching a sub-par motivational speech about winning because he himself has yet to feel it, Mrs. Hoover on her way to pick up her suicidal brother from the hospital, and the son, Dwayne, buried deep into the readings and teachings of Friedrich Nietzsche. …show more content…
Differing intensely from his relations, Dwayne has also taken a vow of silence, which clearly limits his ability to articulate his feelings. Since he chooses not to speak, it makes it very easy on the family to manipulate Dwayne into doing various things he does not wish to do, such as, go all the way to California to support his younger sister Olive in the Little Miss Sunshine competition.     In the 1950’s film Rear Window, director Alfred Hitchcock sets his entire work looking through a man, L.B. Jeffries’ rear window. Because of his broken leg, Jeffries is confined to his apartment, and even to his wheelchair. It is here, in his apartment, that the protagonist watches, or even spies on his neighbors. He draws conclusions on these people, but from a distance: across the apartment-building courtyard. In addition to this physical distance separating Jeffries from his neighbors, his perspective, too, distances him from his conclusions. Only seen through the glass of a window and the lens of a camera, Jeffries’ point of view is confined to only a single vision. We see that this single vision, however, provides Jeffries with an ample amount of information. The avant-garde cinematography combined with the original plot creates a new mean to film.     Little Miss Sunshine, is a film staring The Hoover family, where they trek from Albuquerque to the Little Miss Sunshine pageant in Redondo Beach, California, to fulfill the deepest wish of 7-year-old Olive, an ordinary little girl with big dreams. Along the way the family must deal with crushed dreams, heartbreaks, and a broken-down VW bus, leading up to the surreal Little Miss Sunshine competition itself. Olive’s father, Richard, played by Greg Kinnear portrays the archetype of the Apollo, “businessman”. Richard is a very strong willing, self confident, and aggressive character. Richard is striving to build a career as a motivational speaker and life coach who is also trying to sell his self-help seminar about how to be a winner in nine steps. These nine steps are extremely important to Richard and he does not quit repeating them thought the movie. Richard is very passionate about his occupation, along with the natural businessman archetype. His is constantly thinking about his work even when he is on a road trip to California for his daughter’s pageant show. One the way to California Richard gets the news that he lost an important contract that would have jump-started his motivational business and saved the family from financial ruin.     I loved the film See What I’m Saying; it was filled with new insights about deaf culture and people. This movie follows the life of TL Forsber, singer; Bob Hiltermann, drummer; Robert DeMayo, actor; and CJ Jones, A Deaf Icon. Once I got home from school, I quickly checked Netflix to see if Netflix carries it. My hopes were crushed. There were not many things about the film I did not like, are how hearing people treated deaf people and what troubles follow four deaf entertainers; a comic, drummer, actor and a singer as they attempt to cross over to mainstream audiences. An example is when a deaf man was looking for apartments in his price range he had to use this video chat and the landlord just hung up on him when the interrupter asked the landlord if they have used one of these video chats. I could not believe it the landlord just hung up.
