Duddy Kravitz Analysis
"A man without land is nobody", and with these words, Duddy Kravitz embarked on a pursuit for his own piece of land. Born in the ghetto with a rusty spoon in his mouth and the spark of rebellion about him, Duddy pits himself against the arid and vile environment and rebels against all forms of silver-spooned authority. In his unrelenting quest towards entrepreneurial triumph, his conflicting roles as a businessman, relative and friend constantly highlights Duddy 's strengths and weaknesses - important attributes that eventually lead to his victorious acquisition of land, but tragic failure as a man.

A successful businessman is marked by determination, and this respectable quality is prominently displayed in Duddy; his desire to acquire land is the sole driving force behind his every action. Despite various setbacks such as becoming bankrupt, Duddy was always able to re-embark on his quest for land with renewed confidence, taking each experience to be a lesson well learnt. Yet, it is his formidable resolve that leads to his unethical and manipulative methods of conducting

However, looking deeper into this complex character, one realizes that Duddy 's morally repugnant behavior is due to the influence of a corrupt society, the desperation for approval from his family, and a void of a respectable role model when growing up. Contrary to popular belief, Duddy 's notions on friendships are not as dysfunctional as many perceive them to be: "A friend is a friend. You 've got to trust somebody..." (Page 209) in fact, he is more naïve than sly, often not knowing what actions of his were offending. In his relationship with Yvette and Mr. Friar, he cared for them in the best way he knew how to, that is, ensuring that Yvette was properly taken care off when he was away, and providing financial support for Mr.

Hilton’s employment of characterization captures the drive behind man to belong, and what it can compel someone to do. Dally and Johnny are key examples of this, as their dependency on the gang is due to them not having a supportive family or another place to turn to. This is contrasted with the character of Darry, a more peripheral member of the gang who, due to his stable job and his history of athletic achievements, doesn't depend on the gang for self fulfillment and a life purpose. The Outsiders leads the audience to question the significance of belonging through the allegiance of the gang contrasted with biological bonds of family. Throughout the entire novel, Ponyboy struggles to find his place within the gang and within his family unit, as he fights with his brothers and feels alienated and unwanted. As Ponyboy tries to find his place within life, he turns away from his brothers and towards the support of the ‘greaser family’. Ponyboy’s journey is compared with Johnny, who is pushed away by his parents and looks to the greaser gang for family support and comfort. As Ponyboy gains an insight into Johnny’s life he in turn learns to appreciate his brothers and the sense of belonging they offer. “It ain’t the same thing as having your own folks care about you” Johnny said…

Early in the novel, Duddy worked in a hotel as a waiter in Ste. Agathe and becomes really close friends with an employee named Yvette who takes Duddy out to see an unknown lake only seen by a few lucky people who know of its whereabouts, which is where Duddy begins to strive for his goal. Duddy pleaded to Yvette not to tell anyone about the lake because he doesn’t want other people to get the same idea that Duddy had thought of. He said that he would give her money just to keep it a secret. “If you promise me that I’ll give you fifty dollars” (pg. 100). This shows how Duddy will do anything to keep the land he’s encountered a secret to everyone until he owns it all, which also shows how he will use other people into getting what he wants. This is shown because he’s trying to persuade Yvette to stay quiet about the lake and is trying to bribe her with money to keep quiet.…

A wise man once said, “The road to success runs uphill”. This quotation illuminates that the attainment of success is achievable but must be done with hard work and effort. This paper will shine light upon the similarities and differences between the two North American industrialists, John R. Booth and Frederick Weyerhaeuser and their triumph in the lumber industry. In order to effectively acknowledge their different paths towards an analogous form of success, one must gain knowledge on the process that each had to undergo. My impression of Duddy Kravitz after reading the first chapter is that Duddy is that he is one of the more obnoxious students at FFHS; he smokes and ignores teacher’s commands. Also he talks back to teachers. He seems to be more of a bad apple and tries to be the “funny/cool” one in his class, by drawing on the board and performing stunts like the one he did to the pastor at the new church by convincing him to hand out pamphlets at the school. He terrorizes other students at other schools with snowballs. Duddy is the leader of his group of friends and they follow him just like terrorizing students with snowballs. Over all Duddy does not emit the straight edge, straight “A’s” type of student persona.…

Duddy’s relationship with his family has not always been very strong, but he always looked up to older brother, Lennie. Duddy admires Lennie’s achievements in medical school and aspires to gain success just as he has. It seemed as though Lennie cast a shadow over Duddy because he aspired to be a doctor which is a glorified profession that requires a lot of knowledge and schooling. Duddy’s constant struggle to overcome this shadow that was cast on him is what led him to do such ruthless things and betray his family. Metalluk says in his article, A Born Pusher, “Duddy is not academically inclined, but he’s grown up with a myriad of influences emphasizing the importance of being successful”. (Metalluk) Since they were young, Lennie has always received more attention than Duddy has which makes him feel the need to work even harder to prove to his family that he can succeed. But Duddy has a weakness which is a desire for love from his family. But he never felt as though he received as much love as his brother did. It didn’t help that Lennie was…

Body Paragraph 1: The one most affected by these negative labels is Dally because the words they used to describe him is hood, crook, greaser, hopeless, criminal, and heartless. These are incredibly destructive labels because he got so used to them that he does not love anyone back and I think it is because of his label Heartless. Dally even said “He could never love Cherry Valance back” He barely even loved anything I mean besides the gang and he really did not care when Johnny said he killed Bob Dally just said “Good for you.” He is also addicted to hate because he used to everyone hating him or just saying other things about him. I think he needs a quote like this one “Dear haters I couldn’t help but notice that AwesoMe ends with Me and Ugly starts with U.” That quote explains Dally in my opinion.…

The American Revolution is one of the biggest goals accomplished in the U.S. Many believe it couldn’t have been done without the success of the war without our great founding fathers and generals. Gary Nash begs to differ and sheds light on the roles other groups played greatly on the American Revolution. In Nash’s article prior to readers reading this excerpt he hopes for us to find “hope, an antidote for historical amnesia.” Nash successfully argues in the “Unknown American Revolution,” the up rival of the revolution with the upheaval of female equality, slavery, and common farmers which are proven by secondary sources in the chapter.…

As the New York Times bestselling author Maria V. Snyder once said, “Trusting is hard. Knowing who to trust, even harder.” Often we misjudged people, and sometimes we place our trust in the wrong person. It is all to easy too place your trust in someone and have them lead you astray. This is true for the title characters in William Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. The young couple trusted Romeo’s confessor, Friar Lawrence, but it ended up being that trust that got them in trouble. Friar Lawrence, who was constantly giving them bad advice, didn't think his plans through, and didn't always put the couple’s well being first, and married them, is the individual most responsible for the tragic deaths of Romeo…

Mr. Hilliard is displayed as an envious husband obscured by the thought of his wife cheating on him. His feelings of jealousy are so strong, that he begins “to spy on her” and continuously watch his wife to “justify his lack of faith in her” (Callaghan 24). Eventually, these actions frighten Mrs. Hilliard and make her feel lonely and miserable. This lack of trust destroys love, joy and amity from their marriage, and his jealous character ends up being the very reason of his death at the end of the story. Second of all, the author uses indirect characterization to reveal the harmful effects of envy in a relationship. For example, when Thomas hears “the way the laughter pour[s] out of [Mrs. Hilliard], and the look of pleasure on the young man's face, [it makes] him tense with resentment" (Callaghan 21). As Thomas views how much happiness Joe Whaley brings to his wife, he becomes full of jealousy and hatred. He claims that he has not “heard [her] laugh like that for such a long time” and accuses her of cheating on him with Mr. Whaley. This exemplifies that Mr. Hilliard is insecure of his wife talking with Mr. Whaley, as he believes that Joe is a threat to him. Seclusion and isolation drive Mrs. Hilliard to become miserable and lonely. As for this reason, she seeks the attention of her neighbor, Joe, to relieve her from her desolation. Essentially, the seclusion Mrs. Hilliard faces living with Thomas, ruins her relationship with him and damages the rapport between them. In the end, Thomas destroys his relations with his wife because of his strong jealous character. Through the use of direct and indirect characterization of Mr. Hilliard within the story, one can witness the dangerous effects of envy in marriage and…

When the characters of District 6 are analysed superficially they are not admirable. Mary is a prostitute; Zoot has a criminal record and beats people up. And Mrs Knight goes to church every Sunday and is happily married with 3 children. If you judge these people superficially, you would think Mrs Knight would be the optimum person you could trust to go to in this community if you had a crisis. However once you get to know these characters you realise that Mrs Knight will, in fact, judge you, be angry at you and gossip about you because of your problem. Mary will help you and comfort you in the best way that she can. And Zoot will be likely to collect the Boys’ and get even with whoever has caused your problem. Therefore because of relative morality we begin to see that even though these people are dishonest, lie and cheat it doesn’t mean they are bad and immoral people, they just do what they have to to survive.…
