The Personal Relationships of Duddy Kravitz People are always encouraged to follow their dreams. This is especially true for the main character in the Mordecai Richler novel ‘The apprenticeship of Duddy Kravitz’. If someone has no dreams, they have no goals in life. Duddy goes to great lengths to fulfill these goals and goes from being an innocent boy to a corrupt and ruthless entrepreneur. Kravitz has his mind set to own his own land and will not let anything stop him. He betrays the people he loves the most for his own personal gain. The theme family and relationships in the novel is apparent through Duddy’s interpersonal relationships. These interactions with his family, friends, and role models help shape the man that he becomes. What Duddy gains compared to what he loses is insignificant. The most influential of all Duddy’s relations was that with his family. Duddy’s relationship with his family has not always been very strong, but he always looked up to older brother, Lennie. Duddy admires Lennie’s achievements in medical school and aspires to gain success just as he has. It seemed as though Lennie cast a shadow over Duddy because he aspired to be a doctor which is a glorified profession that requires a lot of knowledge and schooling. Duddy’s constant struggle to overcome this shadow that was cast on him is what led him to do such ruthless things and betray his family. Metalluk says in his article, A Born Pusher, “Duddy is not academically inclined, but he’s grown up with a myriad of influences emphasizing the importance of being successful”. (Metalluk) Since they were young, Lennie has always received more attention than Duddy has which makes him feel the need to work even harder to prove to his family that he can succeed. But Duddy has a weakness which is a desire for love from his family. But he never felt as though he received as much love as his brother did. It didn’t help that Lennie was
