In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Scarlet Letter, Pearl undergoes a dramatic transformation from a devilish infant to a sagely child. Born into a society full of judgment and hypocrisy, Pearl, a bastard child, is unable to escape her predetermined role. Pearl lacks a traditional family; her mother is the sole provider, a direct attack on Puritan standards designating this young family as outsiders. Furthermore, Pearl, unlike her peers, establishes a reputation for being strange because she does not adhere to conventional norms. Despite her apparent shortcomings, Pearl is more perceptive and compassionate than members of her community. Predestined by stringent, oppressive Puritan standards, Pearl is outwardly…

Shakespeare also uses deceit in the play The Taming of the Shrew when Kate becomes pursued. In the play Kate know as a shrewd around town was unable to find a husband, because of her crude behavior. Shakespeare set this up as more of a problem because of Kate's younger sister Bianca who already had suitors after her and pursuing her. This was an issue because if their father had not married Kate off first then he would never be able to marry her off because it would seem as if something was wrong with her and that nobody wanted her.…

In the story the characters tell lies that eventually hurt the people around them .These lies they tell are ones that hurt the people around them. In the story there is an ongoing lie that says “ It's really his wife keeping them apart. She is a Catholic, and they don't believe in divorce”(2.98). Tom had not clarified that Daisy was not Catholic, and that was not keeping him from leaving his wife. This isn't true because the only reason Tom isn't leaving is because Myrtle is just the other women in his life. Another instance in which someone was hurt due to dishonesty was when Tom acted as if he was a loyal friend to George, when he is really messing with his wife. The lies told were demonstrated when Tom says, “ Hello, Wilson, old man”(27). Then later in the story when he finds out about the affair “God knows what you're doing”(199). In searching for an art piece that was relevant to our reading, I stumbled upon Jessica Li’s “The Merry Widow”. It is painted on an oil canvas that measures 7x9, located in the Dana gallery in my hometown of Missoula Montana. Jessica, the artist grew up in Mill Valley in California and painted in New York City for 20 years before moving to Northwest Montana. Jessica unusually meticulous oil painting techniques is grounded in the varnish mediums of the Dutch Golden Age. The New York Times has described her works as “Straightforwardly beautiful” with “an element of weird”. Her work has been noted for its color and luminosity, it’s imaginative and evocative content, and for the high quality of her technique. This is exactly what I notice when I saw the painting of “The merry widow”. The painting depicted a heavier set women sitting down next to what looks to be a table and in her right hand she holds a yellow fan. The more I look at the picture the more the story unfolds. The title of the painting tells me that she was married and her husband died. What is interesting is that it seems as if the funeral just occurred or is about to happen. She is dress up in a black revealing dress, pearl earrings, her curly hair and makeup is done as if she was going out or doing something that required her to be all dolled up. The yellow fan tells me that she could have been in a church, perhaps it was handed out at the funeral. That could explain why she is dressed up.…

In a society with everlasting change and differences people clash on a prodigious scale. By analyzing the stories: ?The Yellow Wallpaper? written by Charlotte Perkins Gilman and ?My Last Duchess? by Robert Browning, one can take a look into the soul of mankind and attempt to define its ubiquitous desire for control and the backlash that ensues. ?Notice Neptune, though Taming a sea-horse, thought a rarity, Which Claus of Innsbruck cast in bronze for me!?(Browning, p. 53) The Duke?s desire for control is shown as he relates him self to a god attempting to capture the most extreme rarity of all: the unattainable enchantment of a sea-horse. Similarly, in ?The Yellow Wallpaper?, John?s naive understanding of the narrator?s condition lead him to attempt the type of control brought on by typical societal practices. By restricting the narrator?s awkward cry for creativity and freedom, he causes her unique mind to fabricate a world of greater comfort to suit her needs, however grotesque and frightening it seems to John?s belief system. ?John is practical in the extreme. He has no patience with faith, an intense horror of superstition, and he scoffs openly at any talk of things not to be felt and seen and put down in figures.?(Gilman, p.153) ?That?s my last Duchess painted on the wall, looking as if she were alive. I call that piece a wonder...?(Browning, p.52). To the Duke, the beauty of the Duchess can be reduced to a painting, and as he values her as an extravagantly rare possession, he never evaluates the fondness and innocence of her youth. His interest is to obtain subjects which have a high monetary value to society while only forming a less compassionate bond boisterous with horrid feelings of disposition and a vast hunger for manipulation. ?Oh sir, she smiled, no doubt, Whene?er I passed her; but who passed without much that same smile??(Browning, p. 53) The Duke?s thirst for attention causes him to become angry over the innocence or her naive disobedience. Finally…

The novel Stones was written by William Bell who was a Canadian author that sadly passed away in 2016, June the thirtieth. He published several other books and many carry the same theme of darkness in them as Stones does, an example being his other book, Five Days of the Ghost. However, his novel Stones remains his most studied book in high school English courses. In this novel, Garnet, who is the main character, works in his father’s antique shop. The setting of this antique shop, called Olde Gold Antiques and Collectibles, and how the business works, is skillfully built and William Bell creates the detailed scenes using references to different senses; sight, hearing, and touch.…

This extract is part of the proposal and marriage scene, one of the biggest emotional dramatic scenes of the play. The duchess is marrying in secret against her brothers wishes; their fear is that she will demean the family’s honour by remarrying. It also forms the most positive aspect of the play, using one of the traditional stage conventions of love, defiance and disapproval (Pacheco and Johnson (2012) pg. 93). This serves to provide a ‘lift’ to an otherwise dark play, and compares the lighter side of the Duchess’ sexual desire to her brother Ferdinand’s.…
