Drowsy Driving Cause
The thing that is most shocking to me is the leading causes of death in teenage driver. I never would have thought that driving off the road would have been the leading cause of death among teenagers at around 30%. I always thought that the cause of most deaths was texting while driving, drunk driving, and speeding. Even though speeding was one of the top five at 22%, I was still surprised that none of the other things that I thought would be on the list were on there.
Other statistics state that “In 2014, 2,270 teens in the United States ages 16–19 were killed and 221,313 were treated in emergency departments for injuries suffered in motor vehicle crashes. That means that six teens ages 16–19 died every day from motor vehicle injuries.” It also explains that “In 2013, young people ages 15-19 represented only 7% of the U.S. population. However, they accounted for 11% ($10 billion) of the total costs of motor vehicle injuries.” What is surprising to me is that …show more content…
In the article “Drowsy Driving” it explains that drivers ages 15-24 and 75-79 had the highest percentages of drowsy driving crashes. It also states that “Male drivers were 1.9 times more likely to be in drowsy driver crashes.” Being a 17 year old male, that fact terrifies me. I was also intrigued when I found out that June through August was the time of year that most drowsy crashes occurred. I would think that it would be during the winter, when everything is dark and days are shorter, not when the days are long and it is hot.
There are many causes of Teenage crashes, but the ones that I would have thought were the most common, weren't, and that teens are responsible for a large amount of motor vehicle injury costs. I was also surprised on how many distracted driver crashes occur in Utah over a year. The final thing that grabbed my attention was that ages 15-24 were the years that you are more likely to crash due to drowsy
