Unmanned Combat Air Vehicles (UAVs), most commonly referred to as drones, are becoming a helpful asset to the military. Drones will most likely be relied upon more in the battlefield and save many military personnel lives because they can be controlled from states away, are becoming more persistent and technologically advanced, and are being equipped with highly accurate yet extremely dangerous weapons.
First, according to (Sherman 35) the fact that a drone can be controlled from just outside of Las Vegas but still inflict severe damage upon enemy contact in Afghanistan and Iraq are advantages the military cannot ignore. As stated by (Sherman 34), “the global hawk, a jet powered drone …. only flew for 3% of intelligence and patrol missions, it was responsible for 55% of attacks on time-critical targets”, targets with short time frames of vulnerability. According to “Tactical UAVS: Defining The Missions”, “The Hermes 450 is a drone……… contains an electro-optic turret, cutting-edge electro-optic sensors, delivering enhance high-quality day and night imagery, laser range finding, target destination and marking .... and precise line-of-sight angular and range data.” All of these traits combined create one superiorly advanced, reliable, and persistent weapon for the military. The way in which the Hermes 450 can locate the range, destination, and finally mark a target can be relied upon deeply during combat because they can locate, pinpoint an exact distance, and expose enemy forces. According to (ONE OF THE CITATIONS) America has a fleet of about ( ) drones and by the year 2020 that number is allegedly going to have quadrupled in amount. The simple fact that these drones can successfully complete more missions than manned airplanes, be in the air longer than manned airplanes, and also save the lives of pilots are all great reasons behind drones being more reliable and possibly replacing manned airplanes. According to “Tactical UAVS: Defining The Missions”, “The question no longer is “Can we find a mission for this UAV?” but rather “Why are we still doing this mission with a manned aircraft.”. The drones are being evolved and enhanced on a daily basis. Their reliability and dependence cannot be ignored by the US Military. The amount of weaponry and technology developed for these drones, how they are controlled from afar without endangering any personnel, and their precise deadly strike are all important factors into their reliability and space on the
