1. What is your reaction to this week's play: "Fences"?
My reaction is that Troy Maxson has made a lot of mistakes in his life, but finally has settled on the right track. He has a wonderful wife, a son, and a steady job. But when Troy's son brings home a request that causes him to look back and dwell on the bitter racism in his unfulfilled past, Troy's stable life takes a downward spiral. As the Maxson family loses contact with each other and relationships change in the blink of an eye, each character must fight through their inner demons to overcome the conflict that has overtaken their family.

2. What do you feel is significant about this play? (Discuss possible themes and the author's intentions.)
Troy, being an uneducated black man living in the south had many challenges and obstacles to overcome. In the end, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree. Rose's character reminds us why our children need an education and woman rights need to be acknowledged and fought for. When she finds out her husband is cheating and at 54 he is going to be a father again. Rose has nowhere to go thick or thin, good or bad, Rose is stuck.

3. What do you think is the value of this dramatic piece and the form of literature it is written in? (Why has this play become a classic, and why is it so highly regarded?)

Fences is one of those rare works of literature that is able to take a real-life situation and turn it into something deeply meaningful and important. It is one of the most accurate and intriguing depictions of relationships between people that I have ever read. August Wilson strikes a perfect balance of plot and dialogue and ends up with a definite home run. It was literature written in

His actions do not change throughout the course of the play. He remains controlling and bitter. He was being selfish when he went to Cory’s school and told his coach he can’t play football no more just because he didn’t have a chance when he was playing baseball. There are many elements that reveal changes in Troy, such as, him and Bono use to be so close. Bono use to come to Troy’s house and see him every day until the day they really sat down and talked about Troy’s affair with Alberta. Bono loved Rose and Troy and he didn’t want Rose to get hurt by Troy’s actions. I know what Rose means to you Troy; I’m just trying to say I don’t want to see you mess up (Fences 1065). He reminded Troy of how much he loved his wife and basically telling him he need to end the affair with Alberta before Troy breaks up their…

Fences by August Wilson is a dramatic and powerful play about Troy Maxson, a hard, gruff man, who has had to learn to survive in a world he does not understand. Growing up, Troy had an awful example of a father. He ran away from home at the age of fourteen, and had to find a way to live even though he had nothing. Now a father himself, Troy finds himself becoming as angry and hard as his father, although he has only ever tried to be a responsible man. Lyons, Troy’s oldest son from his first marriage, is the opposite of Troy. A struggling musician, Lyons’ fatherless childhood condemned him to be an irresponsible dreamer who believes in a future of liberation.…

    3. The connections that I found is that no matter where the time goes or at what age one is, people still have dreams. Dreams do not go away, but they may be ultered because of the choices we make and the different paths of life we may take. In the play Troy wanted to be a professional athlete, but due to the era which he lived african americans were not looked at fairly when it came to playing time. This dream never changed as time passed, but it made Troy bitter and ultimately push away his own child because he was such a great athlete and troy didnt want him to have to lose something he loved due to the inequality. With that being said I…

Former John Wright has been murdered. While he was asleep in the middle of the night someone strung a rope around his neck. That someone may have been his wife, Minnie Wright. Published in 1920 based on a short story called “A jury of her peers” build around a narrative strongly feminist. Susan Glaspell got the inspiration for Trifles from her real life visit to the kitchen of Margaret Hossack whose trial for the murder of her husband formed the basis for the plot. Trifles is a murder mystery, the play takes place in the kitchen instead of at the crime scene of the bedroom. Within the opening section of the play, the main conflict appears to revolve around a search for the murderer, whether such a person who is John Wright’s wife or some other individual. The scene consists of male figures that treat the kitchen as the scene of the crime and not a home. Mrs. Hale shows herself to be the more outspoken of the two women when protesting against the male view of the world as shown when Henderson belittles Mrs. Wright’s kitchen and implies that she was not skilled enough to take care of a home. Mrs. Hale disliked the accusation against her and turns his hypothesis that the kitchen’s appearance must be the woman’s fault by hinting John Wright might have been the cause of the problem. Lewis Hale mocks his interpretation of events by saying “Well, women are used to worrying over trifles,” The overall meaning gender disconnect lies the assumption that both men and womens’ affairs are trifles. In addition to helping create the mood of the play and providing an opportunity to highlight the separation of the genders in Trifles, the cold temperature also foreshadows interpretations of Mrs. Wright's life. Mrs. Hale hints that Mr. Wright did not have "the homemaking instinct," and Mrs. Wright lives in a home that is as cold as the outside weather. Hale admits himself that Mrs. Wright had no influence…

The play begins in the bedroom of Raina Petkoff in a Bulgarian town in 1885, during the Serbo-Bulgarian War. As the play opens, Catherine Petkoff and her daughter, Raina, have just heard that the Bulgarians have scored a tremendous victory in a cavalry charge led by Raina's fiancé, Major Sergius Saranoff, who is in the same regiment as Raina's father, Major Paul Petkoff. Raina is so impressed with the noble deeds of her fiancé that she fears that she might never be able to live up to his nobility. At this very moment, the maid, Louka, rushes in with the news that the Serbs are being chased through the streets and that it is necessary to lock up the house and all of the windows. Raina promises to do so later, and Louka leaves. But as Raina is reading in bed, shots are heard, there is a noise at the balcony window, and a bedraggled enemy soldier with a gun appears and threatens to kill her if she makes a sound. After the soldier and Raina exchange some words, Louka calls from outside the door; she says that several soldiers want to search the house and investigate a report that an enemy Serbian soldier was seen climbing her balcony. When Raina hears the news, she turns to the soldier. He says that he is prepared to die, but he certainly plans to kill a few Bulgarian soldiers in her bedroom before he dies. Thus, Raina impetuously decides to hide him. The soldiers investigate, find no one, and leave. Raina then calls the man out from…
