tragic hero
1. By the definition a modern tragic hero "must be good but flawed, must be artistocratic, must be believable, and must behave consistantly." (Literature and Ourselves, 524). With that being said, I think Troy could be seen as a modern tragic hero. I believe that deep down Troy is a good man, but he is flawed in many ways Rose explains this when she said, "sometimes when he touched he bruised. And sometimes when he took me in his arms he cut." (Literature and outselves, 195). This alone explains how Troy was not the best husband he could be. Troy is flawed, but I also believe he is believable. When he went behind his wives back and cheated, he kept his responsibility and took care of his new baby girl instead of abandoning her. Lastly, I noticed Troy's character behaved consistantly throughout the play. He reminded me of a grumpy old man, who had a hard time showing affection to his family.
2. The symbolism of fences in this story is to take responsibility and keep family close together, fed, clothed, protected etc. Meanwhile, the fence acts as a shield to keep the "devil" death, and evil outside of their home and family. Other forms of symbolism of fences in this play are the inequality between white and blacks. Whether it is playing baseball, football, or being the driver of the garbage truck opposed to the leader.
3. The connections that I found is that no matter where the time goes or at what age one is, people still have dreams. Dreams do not go away, but they may be ultered because of the choices we make and the different paths of life we may take. In the play Troy wanted to be a professional athlete, but due to the era which he lived african americans were not looked at fairly when it came to playing time. This dream never changed as time passed, but it made Troy bitter and ultimately push away his own child because he was such a great athlete and troy didnt want him to have to lose something he loved due to the inequality.
