Dog In The Nighttime Characterization

In Christopher’s point of view, he has been through a rough and difficult life ever since he was born. As an autistic savant, his disabilities tends to trouble others and is treated differently by the major characters of the novel such as his parents. However, although minor characters like Siobhan, his mother and Mrs. Alexander have contributed a small part to the story, they all made a big impact onto the protagonist's future either positively or negatively. Behaving equally and with respect, honestly revealing secrets that importantly relate to him and affecting his family’s relationship can help him improve his maturity, trust and confidence to pass through obstacles that are blocking his personal goals. Siobhan; Christopher’s teacher who assists him of understanding human emotions and appropriately approach problems. Having the lack of knowledge with emotional or body language, Christopher would react the contrary than expected and will effectively hurt others around him. For instance, when Christopher was explaining why he prefers canines was because they were smarter, more loyal and honest than humans. However, after meeting Steve, his opinion of dogs changed because it wasn’t as clever than Christopher had expected. Moreover, Siobhan told him to not mention any of it to his owner since it will deeply wound their feelings. “I also said that I cared about dogs because they were faithful and honest, and some dogs were cleverer and more interesting than some people. Alexander; a neighbor who aided Christopher in solving Wellington’s murder and told him about his mother’s and Mr. Shears’ affair. Although they barely talk to one another, she sees in Christopher as a friend and wants him to trust and depend on her a bit more. After being exposed to his father's secret Mrs. Alexander was worried about how he would react and feel, therefore she gave him a choice to visit her anytime he wanted, if he needed someone to talk to. "I'm not a stranger, Christopher, I'm a friend... If you want to talk about this you can come and see me anytime you want. You only have to knock on my door." (pg. 61) For Christopher to figure out Wellington’s murderer and his mother’s well being condition, Mrs. Alexander would have required to uncover the truth, motivating him to continue his investigation. On Christopher’s spare time, he wrote down their recent conversation in his confidential novel, however after his father had discovered this fact, he snatched it away and kept it with his wife’s letters that were meant to be sent to Christopher, by this reason, he made vast risks to achieve his objectives just as his inspiring role model, Sherlock
