Do We End Racism Essay
A common question in the world today is, “How do we end racism”? This is a question that has plagued the mind of the American psyche for hundreds of years, especially those who feel the cruelty of being looked down upon for something they cannot control, the color of their skin. Do we have riots or do we lead nonviolent protests? Do we calmly speak to our friends about why it is wrong to use the “n” word, or do we beat them up whenever we hear them say it? I'm my opinion, there is no finite way to end racism. Rather, we just alter the way we think. Having gone to Jesuit school all my life, I have learned more about how social justice is growing in our community and in our world. It is unacceptable that we live in a world where mass movements towards ending bigotry are taken as jokes, and where it is socially accepted to make racist remarks or comments. We must, therefore, change the way we think. It is often said that racism will never end, and that may be true if we continue to not challenge our way of thinking and make a choice to no longer accept bigotry in any form, joking or otherwise. Martin Luther King Jr. once said, “Intelligence plus character - that is the goal of true education”. Keeping that in mind, I wish to attend a school that will give me both qualities, not one of the other. The University of Chicago is a diverse community, one that provokes thoughts regarding both education and the world in general. It is also one who, through a timeframe of 127 years, has shaped men and women both intellectually and with character. The amalgamation of academically driven men and women will help me to alter my own way of thinking, learned from both my classmates and my professors. UChicago is also heavily involved in activism, as to change the community for the better, a goal of mine that I hope I will be able to help to further if I
