So what is diversity; and, how do we “manage” it? As defined in the context of the workplace, diversity means “acknowledging, understanding, accepting, valuing, and celebrating differences among people with respect to age, class, ethnicity, gender, physical and mental ability, race, sexual orientation, spiritual practice, and public assistance status” (Esty, et al., 1995). A paradigm is an example serving as a model. In the business world it could be defined as “a cognitive framework shared by members of any discipline or group: a company’s business paradigm” (paradigm, 2009, Collins English Dictionary). For many modern companies, there are two common models, or paradigms, used for managing diversity: the discrimination-and-fairness paradigm and the access-and-legitimacy paradigm. The authors also introduce a third: the learning-and-effectiveness paradigm, which is comprised of elements from the first two, and establishes a more modern and effective way to manage diversity in the workplace.…

-1This acclaimed movie which highlights the racial stereotypes that exist in America was a classic example portraying how everyone without much thought has some sort of prejudgment in the way they treat others of different races. This paper will examine my reactions to this classic movie and explain how it represented the diverse culture we have in contemporary America. I have seen Crash many times and have always been amazed at the realness of the subject matter and great example of the melting pot of cultures of the country we live in. As I watched the movie in class, I was able to relate to the characters more closely because what I saw on film is matched very closely at my workplace. I agree with many of the portrayals of the stereotype that were shown as I feel I have been affected by them. The movie producer’s efforts in showing the different cultures and the way they co-exist are very believable.…

It is important for managers to be educated on diversity, and have an understanding of the differences in their workforce’s population, because it will improve performance potential and increase employee satisfaction. There are numerous benefits to valuing diversity. With each unique combination of gender, ethnic background, culture, and life experiences, each person brings a different set of strengths, skill sets, and approaches to problems. According to Bell, (2007) , “Valuing diversity can benefit organizations in the areas of cost, resource acquisition, marketing, creativity, problem solving, and system flexibility”. This paper will explore my philosophy of diversity. Since I live in the United States, the paper will focus on the United States’ diversity. In the course, ORG6499: Cultural Diversity & Individual Differences we have done multiple discussion journal reflections which relate to diversity. The paper will relate those discussions to my philosophy of diversity. A few of those discussions focused on the United States diversity and it appears that America’s diversity would be pluralistic and Mosaic in nature, which will be discussed a little further in detail. In the course we have also experienced a cultural plunge assignment, which will also be used in the paper to relate and build upon my philosophy of diversity. The Civil Rights Movement along with the Gay Rights Movement and homosexuality will be discussed as part of my diversity philosophy as well. This paper will also consider how being conscious about your own personal philosophy can help you communicate better with others.…

After I took some time to reflect back on my past experiences I realized that diversity has affected me a lot more in my life than I thought. When thinking about question number one (Growing up do you remember discovering that your family did anything differently from other families because of your culture, religion, or ethnicity?), I realized that this actually had affected me and I did not really even realize it. I grew up in a family very rooted in Jesus Christ and the belief that he is the only thing that truly sustains us. Growing up I was always in church, we prayed as a family before every meal, and simply made loving other people a priority in our lives. For me these things seemed completely normal for a while, they just seemed like something that I was innately supposed to do.…

The diversity in the world today helps us all to grow as individuals and open our minds to the different ways of life. When a person becomes exposed to the different cultures and ways of life and how others live their life’s we see that all people do live differently in some way or another, then our minds are not closed anymore, yet they are opened to the differences of the world and we can see that each culture has a difference and that difference has a meaning in their lives. Diversity also promotes tolerance in the world. It allows us to accept other cultures and sometimes even adapt to the ways of those cultures and utilize those differences in our own cultures and lives. Although we are all different in some way or another, we all have differences that can strengthen society. Diversity allows us to learn, grow and understand new ways of living. It also allows us the opportunity to experience life to the fullest. If we had no diversity, we would all be in our own little worlds. With diversity we are able to expand our knowledge and learn more and become less ignorant to the different ways of the different cultures in the world.…
