Divergent Book Report Divergent is a novel by Veronica Roth. This story happens in Chicago in the future. The city is separated into 5 factions based on personality traits. The factions are Abnegation(selflessness), Erudite(intelligence), Candor(Honesty), Dauntless(bravery), and Amity(peaceful). One day every year, all sixteen-year-olds take a personality test that will tell them which faction they are going to be in. After getting the results of their test, they have to decide if they want to stay with their family or go to a new faction. Beatrice Prior is 16 and was born into an Abnegation family, but selflessness does not match her personality like it does her brother, Caleb.
When Beatrice has to take her aptitude test, the results are strange: instead of matching neatly into one faction, she shows equal scores for three factions: Abnegation, Erudite, and Dauntless. This makes her "Divergent" and she is told to never to tell this information to anyone because if she does they will kill her. Even for a Divergent, it is very rare to have results that match with three factions. Even though she is a Divergent, it's unusual to have results with three factions. When she is going home from the test, she runs into a factionless man who grabs her hand and scares her. She starts to feel nervous because she doesn't want to end up like him and is worried about risking her normal life and failing.
On Choosing Day, Beatrice surprises everyone by making the decision to leave Abnegation and join Dauntless, and her brother Caleb chooses Erudite. She instantly leaves to join Dauntless. Beatrice renames herself Tris when she reaches the Dauntless compound to not sound like such a "good girl" becomes good friends with other transfers, Christina, Al, and Will. Another transfer, Peter, immediately starts trying to antagonize her because he does not believe Tris is good enough to be in Dauntless. They have to rank in the top ten at the end of
