Coney Island had become very popular in a short amount of time and in order for the different parks to compete with each other new technology was in high demand. A major invention that supported the success of the amusement parks was the use of the electric light bulb. Luna Park would transform after dark, “‘Tall towers that had grown dim suddenly broke forth in electric outlines and gay rosettes of color, as the living spark of light traveled hither and tither, until the place was transformed into an enchanted garden’” (66). This aspect of the park heightened visitors stay and made Coney seem more magical than ever. Each park on the island had to compete for the affection of the visitors and Luna’s night display inspired other parks to be bigger and better. Dreamland took Luna’s idea and expanded, topping Luna’s quarter million electric lights with their million electric lights. Another important advance in technology for Coney Island was new means of transportation. The bright lights and amusements to the parks attracted all people and transportation was vital. People came to Coney Island by many different routes, “these included excursion boats, ferryboats, railroads, elevated trains, electric trolleys, subway trains, horsecars, hackney carriages, automobiles, and bicycles” (37). Advances in the nickel trolley ride in 1895 provided a quicker and cheaper way to get to Coney…

When I lived in Michigan, one of my fondest memories was going to Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio. We lived over 3 hours away so it was a perfect day trip. When we reached Cedar Point Road, Lake Eerie was to the right and along the horizon seventeen roller coasters stood high as sky scrapers. As we entered the park we were greeted by Snoopy and the Peanuts gang. The park was soon filled with children laughing, parents pushing strollers, and adrenaline junkies looking for the next thrill. As the aroma of sugar candy coated apples filled the air, we dashed to the snack shop for candied apples and cotton candy. We enjoyed our sugary treats on the Giant Wheel which is known as North Americas largest Ferries Wheel. Coming off the Giant Wheel we find ourselves entering Snoopy town, where Snoopy and the gang entertained the audience with music and dance. As the show ended, we decided it was time to ride some coasters. The first coaster we rode was the world’s fastest coaster the Top Thrill Dragster which slingshot us from 0 to 120 mph in less than 4 seconds and in 15 seconds we were spiraled up 420 feet and back down to the finish line. We soon found ourselves wet on Shoot the Rapids the wettest water coaster that took us up and splashed us down. It was refreshing as the temperature was rising. Now we were at the end of the park and to our amazement stood the world’s largest wooden roller coaster. Its handsome and elegant architecture was admirable to look at. Aboard this coaster we were rocketed through the hills and turns, just like life, full of ups and downs. Above all Cedar Point Amusement Park is fun for all ages. It clearly left me with a lifetime of memories, to return home to Maui and share with loved…

An enormous castle fit for any king or queen. The tops look as though they are scraping the sky; colors of pale pink and baby blue grace the tall pillars. A draw bridge decorates the castle. As I gaze into the background, I can see the tip of The Matterhorn, which makes me want to make a mad dash to Frontierland where my favorite Disney attraction awaits. Alas, the Pirates of the Caribbean. As we enter the ride, a scent that is memorable and everlasting overcomes my senses. It is difficult to describe; however, I would say it is a musty, sweet, and wet smell. Sounds gross right? Until you smell if for yourself you will never truly appreciate it. Moving along through each attraction, I can hear The Little Mermaid’s Under the Sea, and look up to see a gigantic crab making its way through the park with the rest of the parade. The loud music and dancing characters will make any adult feel young again. As night approaches, the crowd gathers in front of the castle for one of the greatest experiences of your life, the fireworks. I get choked up as I watch this incredible display of pyrotechnics that creates a Disney experience out of this world. The loud booms and sparkles of pure happiness shower the top of Sleeping Beauty’s…

A huge Mickey’s Fun Wheel jumped out at me right when I walked into the California Park. The colorful flowers set alongside a beautiful lagoon. The clip-clop of horse drawn carriages brought people back to carefree days. And of course, I never forget the biggest reason for going to Disneyland – the rides. There was a number of eye-catching moments here- some featuring otherworldly creatures, and white knuckle thrill rides through the clear sky.…

My first experience with a carnival ride was a Ferris wheel at a local fair down the street from my neighborhood. Standing at a distance and looking at that looming monstrosity spinning the life out of its sardine-caged occupants, I was morbidly frightened and tentatively excited. It was a huge, colorful, noisy and not just your average carnival Ferris wheel. It was the kind that was about 20 stories high just like a New York skyscraper. Well that’s what it looked like. Ever since that initial impression became fossilized in my imagination many years ago, these rides have reminded me of great big mythical beasts, much like dinosaurs carrying off their screaming passengers like sacrificial virgins. Even the droning sound of the Ferris wheel’s engines brings to mind the great roar of a fire-breathing dragon with smoke spewing from its exhaust-pipe nostrils.…
